lynton and Barnstaple manning wardle

Post by LnBmad » Sat Jun 01, 2013 10:03 pm

Guys, I'm looking to make a live steam manning wardle in 16mm. I want to have fully working joy valve gear but am unsure as to how to work out the throw in the steam chest... Has anyone else made on of these locos? I know accucraft sell them but I would prefer to make one am just struggling with the valve gear.

I can recommend this book for what your lokking for. http://www.camdenmin.co.uk/model-locomo ... -3136.html it covers all types of valve gear.
Best wishes

Well some progress has finally been made! I have drawn out 95% of the loco and have the frames marked out and wheels and axles and cylinders ready to go!

Wow. This looks good. What are you using for the cylinders? Home made or off the peg?

Was kindly offered a second hand set of roundhouse cylinders so will fit them on this loco. Other locos in planning stage will have to have scratch built cylinders.

This one will be slip eccentric using homemade eccentrics and rods. The design layout does allow for me to upgrade to full joy valve gear at some point if I can get my head around the correct dimensions.

Well done for taking this bold step Mr L&B. You will not regret building a loco from scratch. When I built my first loco a VOR 2-6-2 a couple of years back I well remember being at this stage. All of it was new to me & I wondered if I'd ever actually finish it. However a year later it was complete, painted & ran a treat.

I'll look forward to updates & hope it all goes as well for you as it did for me.....

Cheers

Thanks Keith! The current battle is getting time in the workshop. But it shouldn't take too long for it to come together.

Frames are now shaped. Just need trimming to length :)

Dunno about that. My workshop is very basic but I hope to produce a reasonable loco. Boiler drawings have just been completed.

Just a thought here.

When Roundhouse built there L&B loco's they avoided the frame cut outs by splaying them out at the front & rear to allow the trucks to swing. Visually this is much better & you can't notice it unless you look very hard.

However if you want the loco to go round very sharp curves IE Mamod there is no other way than to make cut outs as you have done

Below is a Roundhouse L&B

This is Paul Millingtons scratch built EXE, it to has splayed out frames. You can't even tell from this picture.

That's a good idea. I take it the brake cylinders disguise the dog leg in the frames at the rear, the same way the cylinders do at the front?

What's the valve gear on the Millington engine? It looks like 'simplified' Walschaerts modified to resemble Joy gear......

As my line has some mamod curves I had to go with the cut outs. I will be making some in full pieces for when it's not running similar to accucraft.

Thanks. I couldn't see the correcting link, or the fork in the vibrating lever, in the other view.

Well, progress has been made. Still to make bearings, pony and trailing trucks, and valve gear.

Frame spacers are made, just left them in the workshop... Oops!

Wow! It seems I haven't updated this project in a while...

Bearings are now done. Slip eccentric parts on order from dave (hglw) as getting the drawings and time in the workshop to just make them is rare. Axles now in 1/4" silver steel. Pony and trailing trucks made and fitted. Motion bearings fitted. Fake expansion links made to carry motion to the valves.

Happy to say I'm nearly at an air testing point :)
