Out of curiosity, how easy is it to re-gauge Accucraft live steam locos?

You get an Allen key with them and the wheels have allen key grub screws. These locate into dimples set on the axle shafts. Do check the Allen key grub screws are all flush in other words sunken into the dimples on the axle. Some with specific pony trucks have an extra wheel set in 32mm in the box. When buying second hand do check.

And if you´re buying 2nd hand, check that it´s not one of the locomotives that is either/or (like the new "special" GVT, or where it is not possible to switch, e.g. because of the frames or because of the prototype chosen.

Accucraft's come factory set to 45mm and the box includes a nice routered to 45mm display board.

After running my Ragleth for awhile on a 45mm layout the time came to regauge it to 32mm. However something did not look right. One of the dimples on one axle has not been accurately machined so I need to use a back to back gauge/callipers to ensure it is set properly to 32mm

I folks, finally flipped my loco over to try and re-gauge and now I'm not feeling as confident. I'm not even sure if I've got the allen key I need. Anyone know of a picture based step-by-step guide?

Hi Chris,

Here is my Accucraft Ragleth for an illustrated instruction using the front axle. The gauge is currently set to 32mm.

Insert your allen key and loosen the grub screw. Accucraft supply the allen key with their locos, but these tend to go walk about before the loco is sold on 2nd hand. You require a 1.5mm allen key.

Slide the wheel out for 45mm and engage the grub screw on the outer dimple. Here I have moved the wheel well inboard so you can see the outer dimple (the inner dimple is under that wheel).

In this image I pushed the wheel to the furthest outer position to show the inner dimple for 32mm (the outer dimple is under the wheel).

If you have an Accucraft loco fitted with a pony truck like the Excelsior or Leader these came with a 2nd pony truck for re-gauging. Again these tend to get lost so many 2nd hand locos do not come with the 2nd pony truck, and they are not available as a spare part.

Thanks Chris, that' absolutely brilliant. I do have a Leader, but I do have the spare pony truck. I don't however, appear to have an allen key, or at least I haven't found one yet!

Not sure if they still do it, but certainly in the past Accucraft have sent out allen keys if you asked them. I need to get the smaller one (0.8mm?) as I have a crank on my Edrig that the grub screw keeps working loose.
