Ruston repaint

I was recently given a Ruston loco by a friend, the running gear is ok but the body needed a little attention. Here is a picture of the loco as it arrived.

The first thing to go was the driver as it was very creepy. The top layer of paint was also removed to reveal what was beneath.

After the grey was removed I could see that there were lumps in the plastic, these were smoothed out with a bit of sandpaper and a file.

The next job was to change the gearbox for something a little closer to what I had seen. Its made from a copper pipe fitting with a couple of bits soldered to it.

Is that a Salford Models one?

I'm not sure, the last owner said it was a very early IP example but I'm not convinced. I don't think its a Saltford one either as I seem to recall they came with cast fuel and radiator tanks whereas these are plastic.

Only a small update but a big change, the gear box has been finished with the drivers seat and the lot has been given a coat of primer. Im still slightly undecided as to the colour, most seem to be in varying shades of green but I have a rather nice blue that I think would suit it.

I like blue diesels, I think a nice washed out blue really suits small engines. It makes a nice change from green!

You have done a great job on this one Dan, I look forwards to seeing it finished.

If you like washed out diesels Jim I would avert your gaze. I've stuck the gearbox and rear pannel back onto the loco and completed the painting. The main comment I've had from family so far is "its very blue". I'll take some better photos tomorow in the day light during the first run.

Dan, that looks smashing. Even scruffy washed out looking locos would have been ex-works at one time.

That's funny! Growing up in Lincolnshire, when there were still a few industrial NG lines, I thought Rustons only came in clay slurry, and chalk dust! That said, there were some BLUE Simplexes down at the LCLR in its Humberston days.

BTW - what sort of mechanism does she have? Might give an indication of her origin.

My apologies for the delay Rik, some how I missed your post. Its got a slightly odd mechanism, the front axle is driven and held it in its own sub chassis. The rear axle is held by the axle boxes.

Yes, they are a funny lot those GNR boys. They even had a couple of cut down somersault signals at the old site.
