Hi a couple of questions i have yet to find a definet answer to:

1. Would an area with a width of 4.5 meters and a length of 7 be adequate for a loop with station and sidings? as i have an area in my garden this size as well as a long straight section which is 15 meters long

2. Whats the going rate for a decent second hand edrig?

A couple of manual ones I looked at on the trader stalls at Peterborough 2013 were around £450ish.

You could build a railway in that size but it is going to have tight curves. You won't be running eight coupled locos on it!
Saying that with a bit of thought it could be a nice little line.

With 15m of straight run plus the other area you could do quite a nice out and back line.

Peco st607 is 38inch radius which would be fine as is there 45 mm set track go for the biggest possible or in other words use the space. The total space is fine.

The Edrigs fetch good money so maybe a new Ragleth £695would be a better bet, or even a loco without body £595. Add a swift sixteen body later on.Track Shack prices. Shows have a deal often. Simon Wentworth, Anything narrow gauge, often does too.Try to stretch to a new one if you can. Roundhouse Bertie or Millie (these require a push for direction so shunting is not a R/C option, only on the regulator is ever fitted to R/C but they run well) might be worth considering for a similar price. Roundhouse are great as are Accucraft. I had fun with a Mk2 Mamod from Mamod ltd. This Mk2 works well and I'm told the vertical boiler one does too. Regner make good locos too avoid MSS. The more you pay the better things get. Accucraft and Roundhouse lead the market.

The thing to remember is locos don't loose much money.So new is often close by as an option.
All locos I brought, I sold other things to get the funds up for something decent and have never regretted it. I have just sold one loco for similar to what I paid, but have had the fun out of it and not lost on the investment.
