Protecting servos

Before I bolt the servos onto Ragleth I wondered if it was necessary to protect them, especially on the footplate, from oil and water. Seems ligical but cant remember seeing one wrapped up in tape or plastic on an engine.

Having seen the corrosive effects that steam & oil caused in the battery boxes fitted to my 2nd hand Cheddar Iver & Cheddar/GRS Tram locomotives fitting waterproof servos could be a good idea.

However they are generally not cheap, so it is just easier to use the standard and cheaper servos that most people fit, and just replace them when they fail. Ends up cheaper in the long run.

Here is a possible method of making your servo waterproof - http://www.instructables.com/id/Waterpr ... vo-motors/

A trick I use from my R/C Model Boat experience is to encase the receiver in a balloon, although the problem is finding the right type of balloon so that the receiver will fit through the neck of the balloon without it splitting.

Thank you. I ll think I ll use a piece if thin brass sheet over it and perhaps a blob of silicone through which the rod passes. If I grease the rod and blob silicone on it then it wont stick to the rod! Expect to find out what hot silicone smells like
