Paints

As i am starting to get everything together for the list of projects for summer, i think the biggest one of them all is the Repaint from the horrible light gree MSS livery to (one Mr Bond will like!  :lol: ) Dark Blue.

First question:
Is humbrol spray paint all right for the cab/sidetanks/smokebox?
If not, is what else is more suitable?

humbrol should be ok.

but if u can get ur hands on any halfords paint. then use that

Halfrauds etc car paint is probably cheaper and almost certainly more durable. Any motor factors should have a good selection of spray paints, a non- branded (e.g. not Halfords, Motorworld etc) will generally be cheaper.

Okies, thanks for that, I'll go down to town possibly at the weekend to Halfords to see what they have

Oh, and another quickie, how do you take the brass sight rings out of the cab backsheet and cab front?

Hmmm, I would mask them with blue tack. What colour blue do you want because you need to find out what that is in car terms. I asked for a specific colour and they looked at me blancly and asked "Is that in da book?"
So I spent hours trying to find the right colour in "Da Book" of colour matches, found one I like but unfornunatly it was far too light after they had mixed it. The person even said "Oh, that looks a bit light" before ignoring my requests to have it remixed and packing it into a spray can.

Depends how fussy you are- you should be able to get a nice dark blue without too much grief off the shelf, but if you want a specific colour then that's what you'll have to do.

Make sure you don't get a metallic one mind

Humbrol sprays are OK, but you have to be careful as there's very little to distinguish between the acrylic and enamel sprays other than the words 'enamel' and 'acrylic' on the can! Otherwise everything else is the same...

Hmmmm, do the ones that say "glossy" actually come out as glossy, as I would prefer a glossy finish like it has now, or do i have to add a final coat for that

I have been down to halfords, and the only paints they did were stray paints, and only in 300ml, which meant that it's cheaper to get humbrol spray paint!

I assumed you wanted spray paint... I did say Halfrauds would be expensive, a generic motor factors will be cheaper.

Cheaper per unit volume and probably better (easier to spray) than Humbrol, but more expensive as you have to buy a big tin.

The advantage with a big tin however is when some plonker with a garret leaves it far to near a point and your engine comes along and scrapes along the corner of it and ends up with a scratch down the RH side tank, you already have the spray to respray it rather than having to go out and buy some more.
