Difficulty steaming Mamod SL6

Post by BluSteamFan » Tue Jul 08, 2025 6:36 pm

Hello all,
In the past year i purchased a mamod sl6 loco, and when i tried steaming it on distilled water and esbit tablets, the water only bubbled out of the saftey valve and ran around my loop of track once before abruptly stopping no matter how full of water it was at. The cylinders seem to catch in place when i roll it around forwards and back every so often. also, a tiny bit of bubbling water leaks out the sight glass at higher water temp/close to making steam. Also, I just got one of the spirit burners from tony green steam's website and want to make sure there's a way to drain the liquid fuel out of it, as I am hoping to take it on a trip out of the states to the awdry extravaganza 2025 at Talyllyn. I am also going to london before hand, so reccomendations of places to buy distilled water and any kind of spirits fuel or solid fuel in case i can't bring my new burner would be helpful. Hope I could get some help getting it running. I live in NC in the US, so if i will need to get any tools or anything, reccomendations on places to get those would be helpful if that's neccessary.

It's been a long time since I owned a Mamod, but I recall having similar issues with it.

I did find trawling the Mamod section of this forum to turn up all sorts of useful info, problem spots to check on the loco, and many methods to get them running properly.
