Being in no small part a pway man I have to admit to finding the intricate and often bespoke point work of traditional tramway systems a real fascination. (On our first major holiday together, many years ago now, my partner despaired at my interest in the tramlines of Prague!). The main tram depot in Nottingham still survives (but not for much longer) as a bus garage. The part of the depot throat nearest the tram shed still exists and is a wonderful collection of sharply curved pointwork. Trams and their infrastructure have a unique fascination, the old cars themselves were generally works of art in my view!

Who remembers the late 70's sit com 'I didn't know you cared'? Uncle Mort had a fascination with tramways. In one episdoe he recounted a near death experience on which he was conveyed by tram. He commented that it was a good ride 'apart from a dodgy turnout just in front o' t'pearly gates!'. In another episode he likened someone to the rear end of a Stoke-on-Trent tramcar!

I really must get out more!

I seem to remeber that there was a large scale tram exhibition layout doing the rounds a few years ago. Does anyone else remember it or am I dreaming again?

A British 1:16 scale tram layout turned up at the big Karlsruhe live steam event in Jan this year. It attracted a lot of attention, even from those who had sworn off electricity to devote their lives to live steam.

There's a chap near me who has built the majority of trams for this layout. He has a line in his garden for them to run on too.

The layout often appears at the Chichester model railway exhibition in October.
