Mamods are o gauge, but what scale are they?

They are aproximatly 16mm scale but are at the smaller end of locomotives. When blown up to full size they come out similar to the quarry Hunslets.

Probably splitting hairs, but I was given to understand they were more like 12mm to the foot.
But it doesn't really matter as long a you think it looks okay, its okay.

Ah the old scale or is it gauge discussion.

The original Mamod SL (now MSS) locomotives were available for 32mm & 45mm gauge track and to quote the 16mm NGM e-group were generally considered to be nearer to 14mm scale. The current second generation Mamod community accepts them as 16mm scale.

The current Mamod oscillators (Mark II & Diamond Jubilee Saddle Tank) are basically the same size as the earlier SL locomotives but due to a difference in chassis heights (no slot cut-out at the rear to allow a solid fuel burner to be used) their cabs are not as tall and you will not get a standard 16mm scale figure to fit. Indeed Rob Bennett makes a special sized/scaled Mamod SL/MSS driver figure which just fits in the Mark II cab because he is leaning out.

The latest Mamod oscillator (Thomas Telford) due for release soon is bigger than the Mark II but as it now has a cut down chassis we do not know its final dimensions yet.

Just as a headsup - a standard SL Mamod is infact 16mm scale perfectly. When coupled to an exact-to-scale Talyllyn bogie rake [thanks to Clan Acton], they were identical height and width. So they're 16mm - just to Talyllyn/Corris loading gauge.
