Elevated garden railways.

I have seen numerous videos on Youtube where a whole garden layout is elevated off ground level on wooden stilts , sometimes even as high as waist level with no protective railing.
This makes me wonder, considering the derailments that can occur to locomotives , will it not be too risky if a 3 kg locomotive plunges to the ground? Does this happen at all or is it only me that has the occasional derail?

If your locos are derailing this might be down to poorly laid track or kinks in the rail.

Get your spirit level out and check for eveness along and across your rails in the problem areas.

You could add more wood along the edges so if a loco derails she should just rest on them or use cut up bread/ beer baskets to act as a crash barrier, the barriers can support a Roundhouse Millie

Mine is 2. 1/2 ft high and I have had a couple of very light wagons blow off but no locos yet. I think its inevitable one day it will happen. Everything happens one day! I thought to use treated batons raised alpng some parts where the track is close to the edge but it r does spoil the view so I am going to use thin wire, equivalent to the new crash barriers on motorways, feared by motorcyclists, but hardly seen on a railway. The Whirlers Hill Light Tailway doesnt have a motorcyclist yet , a nice trials bike chased by Ragleth mmm. Could make a nice short film.

As mentioned above, a derailing is inevitable with time ,especially at a public or semi public railway where many people who may not be used to that particular track layout can gather to try out different locos. There are bound to be 1 or 2 runaways the head for a bend too fast and derail ,hence my question .
It would be an expensive plunge.

Make the board a bit wider. to allow for things falling off/ adding scenery and buildings

Raised railways could be great, but often, they just look what they are, a plank of wood, with some track stuck down,.
