Crazy idea

Post by R31 Mark » Fri Sep 30, 2011 2:32 pm

Hi all,
I have developed a sudden "lust" for small Garratt's, sorta like DHR one's etc. From this lust came the want to build one, but one which uses something like a Mamod minor boiler, Meccano wheels and 1 Mamod ossy cylinder at each/ one power bogie. Anyone have ny input on this crazy fool's idea?
*EDIT*- crazy plans below

Duno whesther it would work, however I've had similar ideas with either a upgrade boiler or a custom one and just a powered front bogie (ie two cylinders) and a trialing back one.
Thanks
Jack

You will need dry steam[super heating]and lagged steam pipes. It would start essayer with a two cylinder bogie.Hope to see it one day.

Not really, pipes would have to be lagged anyway, as the loss of heat on travel would mean the steam would to conddestate. And two cylinders is failry logical.

To lag a pipe all need to do is rape string around the pipe.

Just thinmking, would the best way be to only power the front bogie, making the back one free rolling. Then possibley would it be a indea to use a upgraded mamod boiler? Then the steam pipe to the cylinders would pass over the burner on the way to the cylinders, meaning its kept heated for at least part of its lenght.
Thanks
Jack

My idea has the steam pipe going under the boiler to, thus being heated by the flames. But an upgrade boiler would logically be better I suppose :), It is worth thinking over as using mostly bought parts means that in practice the loco would be easier to make, therefore it is actually a realistic goal, all we need is to think clearly and plan well, discussing all this on a forum like this let's us share, and GAIN knowledge too, which would be all the better to making a loco. And The best part is that other's who share this want can read and learn from this. Woo that was corny aye

I'm currently going the the design stages (between my apprenticeship and building my line!) of doing similar, but using a new bigger internally fired boiler, so you can get more steam size wize, but still using mamod cylindeers etc. Will watch and see howyou get on!
