Hi all,

This is cool a whole sub-forum for Mamods!

Well heres a photo of mine when I purchased it off a friend

I stongly disliked the rather cheap, dark and nasty looking paintwork/livery

So I given it a re-paint in GWR green (for display)
it is currently in for a complete re-paint and having a new boiler and few other parts fitted such as a meths burner and so on (when they arrive)

Blimey you have got a good one there. Of course it looks great in western green as anything does..

Always fun fettling mamods, it's why I would never get rid of mine...although there are times I would gladly throw it at a wall.

Its a good runner but it is quite old!
I'm not sure what the chap I got it off of was putting in it maybe lemonade or something, perhaps he tried giving it a drink haha the boiler was all furry and a strange green colour inside (I don't think that's what a boiler is suppose to be like some how)
And when I went to fix a small leak around the insert where the dome screws in, I discovered pepper pot wholes in the top of the boiler and now it leaks like a sieve so that's two of the reasons I'm getting a new boiler.
Realy its a loco full of surprises some good and some very bad!
And yes I do know that feeling where you just want to throw it at a wall haha

Eeek holes in the boiler...Some corrosive water been in there then, My mamod sat dumped outside from 1993 to 2009 & the boiler was mint & still in use.

Oh & what spoon are you on in that avatar pic? They don't let me loose with them anymore, just bodysnatchers.. But I do love a good brush!

Although there's hours of fun to be had modifying and repairing them, I can happily report that the W&LLR MPD is currently a Mamod and IP free zone

Very nice. I have an SL1 that I repainted about a week ago & she's a little champion. I think Mamods should get a bit more credit as they are the most numerous 16mm scale live steam engines ever made. Here's a tip if you're giving your engine a top notch repaint. Paint the cab in black & cream with some gloss varnish for protection & it'll look great. Trust me, that's what I did on my engine & she looks like she means business

and saying that, never, ever, spray paint your mamod loco with Humbrol spray paints, a year on and I'm now re-painting the dam thing!

I use the Humbrol enamel paints & they work really well. The gloss paints are really good for steamies. Especially with the gloss enamel varnish. Good finish & the paint lasts a long time with it

Which is what I used inside the cab, and thats lasted fine! (even withstands heat from cabs fires from the meths chamber! )

I have found the plastikote spray range works well on mamods.
Going back in the thread a bit the green coating inside the boiler is due to acid reacting with the metal in the boiler, someone must have tried to descale it with a very potent acid to cause the holes.

I just use cheap car spray paints from Trago Mills, they are about £2.99 a can and they work a treat!
Although I do find the halfords spray paints do a just as good a job but they tend to be allot more expensive and in cold weather they dry matt

When I did the re-paint on my Mamod I striped it back to bare metal using a mini sand blasting kit which is hooked up to a air compressor (very useful and recommended tool) when I did that I applied grey primer and when that dried I spayed it in that lovely GWR green!
