My New Laser cut coach :)

First of all i would like to thank Zach for advice on how to cut it properly...although the software bumped the speed up to 8% speed from 2.1% so will have to investigate that because it didnt cut 100% the way through but here is a set of pictures starting from design to finished cut . More will be made after the half term all thats missing is the base at the moment!!! and wheelsets oh and need to modify the bogies as they were hit and miss.

The bogies will have 24mm diameter wheels and not the 16mm wheels shown and also the coach will be stained then varnished as the engraving isnt as deep as i would of hoped! althouhg it tooke 15mins for the whole thing to be cut out

Thanks guys the main shape of the coach was dreamt up on graph paper a year ago and then spent 2hours in school designing it and adding detail also decided it would have a 2011 year plate also they teachers like me using it cos i know as much about how to use the machine as they do so im kinda they testing bunny [/quote]

Thanks! I have only noticed one thing i done wrong thought .. the bogies centeral strut is slightly oversize but not a worry as can be manualy cut down.. but the pivot point is off set =[ but nothing i can do until after the Easter Holidays

Will be producing one mor of these and then a guards comp. version... also do you think that for 'bearing' thin drinking straws will work.. as the holes in the wood are 4mm but the axels are 1/8(3.125mm) they run freely but as Christopher (cjallenby) pointed out that after having a rake of 3 this may cause alot of friction causing a heavy train

Ive been waiting for my school to get one for 4years now i have got 2months to make the most of it as i finish year 11 soon and am going to college.. but hopefully thell have one there aswell

And thanks Zach ill have a look at K and S tubing just hard to find 1/8 inner diameter =/ if i can only find 3mm ill attempt to turn the ends of the axles down a little bit..final question will a 1/8th axle spin in a 1/8th tube?

EDIT : Found some brass tube on ebay which are 4mm outer diameter and 3.4mm inner diameter so that should suffice

Excellent job, really nice looking coach! And I would also say you need bearings in those bogies, just bits of copper tube the right diameter glued into the holes could do the trick?

IMHO you have made a really good job. Have you tried cutting at 100% power speed 1.2% and engraving 100% power and 3.5% speed?

You could copy the way I make my 7/8" scale axleboxes. I make the axle bearings on my turret lathe but perhaps K&S brass tubing? The axle bearing is used to locate and align the parts. Works well and once glued together is very tough.

Pete- Yeah i put a bid on some brass tubing with 4mm outer diameter and 3.4mm inner. so that will fit snuggly in the hole that has been made and then a 0.2 mm play inside the tube shall work i think

MrAcme- Yeah thanks for the info i shall experiment after the holidays but the tech need to investigate why the software on the pc Bumps the Speed up to 8.2% every time we go below 5%

K&S brass tubing is telescopic and being made in the US comes in 1/32" OD increments.

If you get a length of K&S #128 5/32" OD brass tube, it will have a bore that is a running clearance for 1/8" axles. 3mm axles would be a rattly fit, but it would work for them as well.

Thanks for everyones nice comments and advice Here is a sneak peak ofa design i have been working on for the last hour or so..( managed to source a version od 2D Design v1 which can be opened in school using 2D design v2)

Still more bits to design on here so that i get maximum yeild from eaach panel of ply.. so these will be cut out in about 2 weeks

Not nitpicking but correct the spelling of guard. If you don't you'll have endless ribbing once it's burned.
