Beauty to Beast!

I have now partly bought a secondhand radio controlled russell (still to pay the rest over next couple of months). The conversion from the origional PB&SSR/NWNGR russell to the later WHR's can soon begin (once I get the loco in a couple of months). It won't be a quick project, a new gas tank and modification of the safety valve and pretty much fabricating a new body for the loco will have to happen. I am also going to thin down the valve gear to get rid of horrible sight of the standard valve gear, it's much too chunky. Once done though it should be something different and I will admit it won't look as nice, but that's the kind of thing I like, it just shows the state the WHR was in and typical of the narrow gauge. I think the image of russell, which will be painted in 'sea' green, lined black and orange, hauling a rake of colourful coaches will be great, there will probably be alot of people who will hate it though!. Most of you will know what russell looks like in this form but for those who don't there is a link below. The rinbow livery on the coaches is also obvious.

Well, it's certainly ambitious!

How exactly do you propose to go about "thinning down the valve gear" and lowering the safety valve? Not doubting your ability to do it or anything, just curious...

I have to say, I don't have the ability to do most of the modification, my grandad will be doing this and I will be using this to learn so he won't be doing anything without me being there. He has bought me a couple of machines so it's just sort of starting, doing some simple things while leaving the difficult bits to him whilst watching. As for the motion, my grandad has already done this to one of his roundhouse locos and it looks superb, although I don't quite know how but he said it's a simple enough task. I'll have to take a closer look at the safety valve and regulator, I think some sort of compromise will have to be made, having the safety valve under the dome and making up a new regulator but this will probably have to stay in the same place, this will be the hardest part and probably best left to my grandad, although he has had a quick look at some pictures and says he can make it work. A new gas tank will also need to be made, but again nothing too hard.

A VERY clever grandad :D , I am trying to learn as much as possible from him and not take it for granted so one day I might be able to build something of somewhere near the quality. He's been an engineer his whole life so has lots of experience.

I like that lots! :D

I don't know why, but I've never really been a Russell fan, but to me that looks brilliant!
