Locomotive nearly finished

Post by Tony Bird » Sat Jun 27, 2026 8:59 am

Hi,

I am coming towards the end of constructing a steam locomotive that uses previously built prototype parts that were made for other projects and some Meccano parts.

Take care Tony.

Tony
been watching your build on FB etc, I am a bit confused about what each engine is driving. The first is the main drive shaft driving the gearbox to the front drive wheels, and a chain drive turns the rear wheels, the second drives the flywheel, is this correct? But what does the third engine drive? I can't tell from the various photos. just curious, thanks

Hi,

The three single acting engines are set at 120 degrees to each so that the engine is self starting; their fly cranks are gear wheels that couple the engines together. The engine was a prototype marine engine which could drive via its outer engines two propeller shafts, the flywheel being between them. The engine had been 'under the bench' for years and I thought I would do something with it

Take care Tony.
