Sorry to hear about Plod’s kidney stone which I’m sure is not very comfortable. Just wondering if Teflon tubes might also be part of the solution for particular problem…

Sorry to hear that Dazza, I'm sure you will be back to full steam before too long!Hydrostatic Dazza wrote: ↑Mon Feb 16, 2026 11:20 pm Garratting has ceased for a spell while Captain Plod unsuccessfully gave birth to a Kidney stone. However this birthing process has more to episodes to go in the near future.
The boiler frame got to this stage before the Opiates were called upon and hospital visits.
Normal programming will return soon.

Thanks. I try to have a place for all and one put things back when done and a casual sweep with a small little hand held dust buster vacuum cleaner.

Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1
Captain Plod struggled to fit the quad rigs to the trial Garratt 3/8" piston blank. The little blighter would twist and generally not co-operate without fear of damage.
Plod wound up his Mark 1 cranium computer and set forth to seek a solution.
He surprised himself.
He now has a simple set up of slides. It pops in the right in a simple slide and snap.
How did that happen ?

Pistons and rods.

Quad rings rather than O rings. The are better in dynamic movements than O rings and they have other advantages.

10BA studs and nuts rather than cheese head screw. Rather fiddly but the result should be pleasing.

Clever to use hex bar to ensure the radial holes are evenly spaced.

Fascinating build with some lovely machining. Interested to know the gear ratio have you selected for the Slomo and what size flywheel?Hydrostatic Dazza wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2026 10:22 pm There is apparently two Slomo two mechanisms here. Some assembly required.

As ever looks AMAMZING Dazza!
My though for Slomos is probably too late, how about a tungsten flywheel?
Brass is 8.5g/cm3
Tungsten 19.3g/cm3
The tungsten flywheel would need to spin at 66% of the speed of the brass flywheel to achieve the same inertia.
You could then simplify the gear train to probably half the gears and reduce the overall friction in the system...
Of course then you'd probably have to turn tungsten

I fitted what gears I could source and the fly wheel as big as I could, I will get back to you on the the details. But I have an option to fit more flywheel mass outside the mechanism but still in side the frames. Stay tuned.Durley wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2026 2:35 pmFascinating build with some lovely machining. Plod pondered this some months ago for about 5 mins. Source, machining, taping threads, costs, he is too old to try and go down that path.HugoFitz wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2026 8:59 pm As ever looks AMAMZING Dazza!

if you look at the pic of the drawing draft layout I have the teeth number written on the coloured gears.Durley wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2026 2:35 pmFascinating build with some lovely machining. Ah yes, thanks. So that is 50:16 x 40:16 x 40:30 so just over 10:1.Hydrostatic Dazza wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2026 12:23 am
