Visiting other garden railways

Post by tommygander1941 »

So I'm not a new 16mm Association member, but I've only visited a few garden lines. That's generally because I either don't know very many people, or only being able to use public transport complicates things.

How does one go about befriending other members to the point where invites are handed out, I presume it takes a while to get to know members which is fair enough. Just seems that the only times I've been able to run this year were at the Llangollen and Bala shows (in May and September respectively), as I haven't got a line of my own and neither have any of my friends who also model in 16mm scale.

I do have a loco that can run on either 32 or 45, that was a problem before I bought it. Also seems there aren't many people with garden lines around the Wrexham/Llangollen area, at least who aren't in the 16mm Association, is that just a matter of people not joining or who generally keep to themselves and aren't aware there are more people than it seems?

All in all really I'd just like to make connections with people, even if I have already have fallen out with a few people due to let's say personal reasons but I digress. I try to always be kind and courteous, so in the future if I do ever come across otherwise I do apologise, I'd just like to make more friends who happen to have garden railways and sometimes I get over-zealous

Your biggest limitation will probably be transport..

I am sure there must be more than you think? - I am always surprised, when they pop out of the woodwork.

All I can suggest, is getting to shows, and enquiring whilst there.. Slowly you will find others in your area.
The heritage lines, quite often have a model railway 'presence' amongst their members, and some have a track onsite.

Hi
The 16mm local group is fairly active. I've been to an open day at the Clwyd & Dee Garden Railway hosted by John Wenlock. It has both 32mm and 45mm track and is situated just outside Wrexham. Well worth a visit (though you'd have to beg a lift, it's in quite a rural area)

If you fancied a trip into Cheshire, I'm not far away - but you might find my railway a bit of a challenge if you're into live steam.

Ah yes John's railway, I have been to a couple of the area group lines and one of the members had asked if I'd been there. Not sure how active John is and I certainly haven't seen any indication of his line being part of the area group's regular open days.

And where your railway is, I have a friend who's just recently purchased an Edrig and apparently lives quite near Peckforton so perhaps he'd be able to bring me. Although he isn't part of the Association yet, he has done a lot of the work on the loco by himself as he's an apprentice at Crewe with LSL and luckily the Edrig is a re-gaugeable loco, same as my Friog 'Punch' (the loco that is my profile picture).
