he just sits there, slowly being swallowed up by the undergrow as the real engines chuff along by

Put batteries and/or new chassis in and run as is...real locomotive traction not pristine preseveration....even if its a bit shakey/wobbles etc
Even build a delapidated shed around it as the undergrowth is superb and will blend in .
