Can anyone recondmend a motorgearbox ,Essel Used to do them but they have been removed from their web site

Hi,
I sourced the motor gearbox unit for the recent re-build of my petrol/mech. loco through a robotics website in Western Australia, but I'm sure you should have similar sources available in England. Hobby Robotics provide a very useful range of combination motor/gear units along with suitable connecting joints, chain, hubs etc.

The drive parts used in Essel chassis are still on the website. Geared motors are under electrical components and bevel gears, chains, etc. are under chassis components.

As Grant suggests, robotics hobby suppliers are a good source for battery-electric loco drive components. I recently bought geared motors from the same Aust. source that Grant used and steel bevel gears from the Oz branch of RS Components.

I think Essel get theirs from MFA Como. I've used a 918D 12-24v 1:30 gearbox motor in one of my builds but as you can see there is a wide range of different options - https://www.mfacomodrills.com/gearboxes/gearboxes.html - and they are remarkably reasonably priced

I have used the same motor/gearbox as Rik in several of my chassis and they are very good in operation. One I have managed to rig up to a geared four wheel drive using nylon bevel gears.....

Thanks for the replys ,I have a couple of old freelance diesel locos that have the IP type chassis which just strip the gears in no time. They don't have a the space for the above mentioned ones are there any smaller ones available.
PS. I don't know how I missed the m/gearboxes on the Essel site ,just another senior moment.

I know what you mean about the IP gears. I've been through a few myself with my Jessie. Eventually, I replaced the whole IP system with a USAt motor block, but I'm 45mm gauge. See https://riksrailway.blogspot.co.uk/2014 ... my-ip.html

Hi Methsman,
I don't know if this fits your criteria, but the motor gearbox combination I recently fitted to my petrol/mech. loco is 34:1 reduction 12volt and measures approx. 25mm diam. and motor gear casing is 53mm long. Brush contacts and shaft extend these measurements. The shaft is 5mm diam. if I remember correctly and about 12mm long.

PS this unit mounts by tapped holes in the gearcase, very sturdy for a bevel gear drive.
