Roundhouse nameplates
Roundhouse nameplates
Hi all
Any suggestions as to how you go about painting loco nameplates. Do I -
1. Paint all over and then fine emery to remove paint from the letters.
2. Try and paint only in the wells trying to avoid the letters. (The Makers plate letters are tiny.)
3. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Yes - leave until the paint is REALLY dry - do the "rubbing off" on plate glass if possible - then brush with a fairly stiff brush to remove the paint dust.River Lin:123332 wrote:1. Paint all over and then fine emery to remove paint from the letters.
I've never used emery, but doesn't it leave marks on the letters, no matter how fine it is ?
The method I've used several times is to paint the plate all over then, while it is still wet, rub gently over the face of it with a piece of smooth card - something like a postcard. You need to repeat two or three times with a clean bit of card but it leaves the face of the letters clean and shiny without touching the paint below. Then leave to dry.
I'm sure this is the method recommended by Narrow Planet when I bought some plates from them. Seems to work well.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I flood painted them on Wednesday and they have been near a radiator in the kitchen ever since.
Tomorrow or maybe Sunday I will carefully 'wet & dry' on a glass surface. then a polish will be in order. A photo will follow after the weekend to show how I got on

Make sure to post up pics once you have them applied to the engine. RTV sealant, like for sealing up a fish tank, is best for applying. Keeps from tearing up the paint if they ever need to be removed. I just did the name plates for my Baguley Drewery diesel a couple days ago. Mike
