The chuff pipe I believe also controls the exhaust back pressure making for smoother running. It is one of the mods that people put on Mamod/MSS locos to try and get some nice slow running, but I've not felt the need to try it out yet - it is easiest to use in the SL2/SL3 with the balloon chimney st...
Built many Airfix, and other brands when I was younger, but like Graham none of them exist now. I still have some boxed kits to build one day, including a special set of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight which an aviation museum in NE Scotland were selling very cheap - I looked at it as giving t...

You can get these little packs of Mamod spares that contain the Sight Glass plastic plus the oval washer (these are much better than using a thin 'O' ring as that allows the loco plastic glass to touch the boiler and get a oval shaped groove melted into the plastic which probably helps it fail earli...

An interesting variation on the standard loco. Never thought about that configuration so must try it out for comparision. Did you manage to find the circlip you lost? I always thought if fitted secure these would not fail, and it does not look like there is anything sticking out on your wheels to in...

Yes that is exactly how my loco sight glass went, and it leaked in that condition. I also bought my SP2 which had an even worse melted sight glass but that was replaced before I even attempted to run it - screw on sight glass holder so really easy to replace. I seem to be getting more of a run out o...

Great Video Graham, I'm glad I was up early to log on and see it. Nice to see that other stock runs on Mamod track as that is exactly my idea as well. I've got quite a few of the Big Big Train locos and rolling stock, and a large collection of Faller E-Train as well. What was the first loco being us...

Here's a photo of my meths burner which may help. http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w283/CCairns_2007/MethsBurner.jpg It has 2 deflectors which have 4 small wings bent on the side and are just a push fit into the chassis frames. The one at the back I push right up against the front of the meths tan...

Are you suffering from the meths flames creeping up into the cab at the back? My non IP/PPS meths burner came with 2 deflectors which slide into the chassis and do a good job of keeping the flames in check. I've just put my IP burner from the IP Jane into the MSS Saddle Tank, but I've still got some...

Great photos, and thanks for sharing them with us. Looking at other members photos has persuaded me to look into joining the 16mm NGM, and I've been invited to a Garden Railway meet today for a chat, and asked to bring a loco as well. Unfortunately due to last minute contract work in the last 2 days...

That's the advantage of the plastic sight glass on the Mamod locos, it acts as a secondary safety valve and will go before anything else breaks. ACLR I though you had already replaced the sight glass, or was that from another loco? I've just found an even cheaper website for those Mamod spares packs...

Sounds like it is the valve that is leaking on your tank and not the tank itself. Not taken one of these valves apart but I understand that being exposed to butane/propane can cause 'O' rings to go brittle, and that is probably what your tobacconist is changing. I agree that £35 - £40 for a brass ta...
