Re: small 16mm loco Boiler Certificates

Thanks Tony I see what you mean. Don't know why the 16mm assoc can't just say no testing or certification is required in order to be covered by the groups insurance and anything more than this is purely at the whim of the exhibition organiser or layout owner who all seem to delight in quoting small ...

Re: small 16mm loco Boiler Certificates

Thanks Tony I agree with you about the woolly wording from the 16mm association, I get conflicting statements, so I am trying to pin Mark Rennie down to yes/no answers to specific questions. I agree with you that I don't believe we need boiler certificates, the insurance document states that, but it...

Re: small 16mm loco Boiler Certificates

I am a member of 16mm assoc. I still need better clarity on whether a certificate is a must or an option and what makes that certificate "valid" given that earlier roundhouse ones were generic and did not have a serial number to link it to any specific boiler.

small 16mm loco Boiler Certificates

Can anyone offer simple clarity on the need for boiler certificates? I am only talking about 16mm locos manufactured by Roundhouse and below 3 bar/litre. Please do not consider anything larger here. As I understand it, any boiler made by roundhouse in the uk is fully tested to comply with any requir...

Roundhouse Billy like you've not seen before

This is a modified, repainted and weathered Roundhouse Billy on shed on the Hambleden Valley Railway. Modifications include a slomo and chuff pipe along with at least 10 other details added, how many can you spot? Are there any issues with the old square gas tank? Any idea how old this is or when Roundhouse changed to using the round ones? Should I consider replacing it with the current round type?

Thanks Tony, I suspected I needed to remove the boiler. No problem, as I was planning to strip the loco down anyway. Thank you for your speedy response, this forum thing is so useful.

Old Roundhouse Billy

I have purchased an old Billy loco (one with a square gas tank) and I want to fit a chuff pipe. There seems to be 2 problems with this. 1. I can't remove the smoke box as the steam feed pipe to the cylinders goes through a large hole in the smokebox base and not a slot as in later models and 2. the ...

Thanks Rik, just viewed your blog and that it very much was I was intending to do. The sound cube may prove to be better because the recording can be an mp3 loaded directly rather than via a microphone. I will experiment and report back

May have come up with the answer - greetings card recorder.

Can record up to 10 secs of audio - play a steam sound whistle - and play back with a simple switch. Will need some mods, but nothing too tricky.

I use lococontrol, not deltang, but basically the same thing. I don't have a soundcard in mind, apart from possibly mylocosound. I didn't want a steam whistle as with a slomo in place, there is not really room for a live steam one. Also requires mods to the regulator fitting etc and I don't really l...

Steam Whistle

Has anyone managed to fit an electronic steam whistle sound to their R/C live steam locos? With all the sound cards around these days, it must be possible to get a steam whistle sound using a pair of switch contacts as the input rather than full blown DCC. I have a servo switch that connects to a ch...

Ahhhhh so you have the attractively slow Lady Anne. Just for future reference where did your slomo come from and what was the coatings? I get them from SSP in Australia. They cost about £200 but vary with the exchange rate (not good at present) You might also get hit for import duty of around £50 b...

Has anyone trying insulating the gas tank to stop it getting too hot. you haven't told us what loco this is, which makes any definitive answer difficult. I have one loco where space in the cab is very tight and I had to fit a piece of 0.8mm ply as a spacer between the gas tank and the boiler to ens...

Has anyone trying insulating the gas tank to stop it getting too hot. I was thinking of a pad underneath it to stop it touching the footplate, something like a disc cut from a polystyrene coffee cup. Might also be able to make a jacket from the same stuff to wrap round the sides of the tank??
