Re: To notch or not to notch

Only a slomo will give controlled acceleration and de-accerlaration and allow for a smooth slow running performance Only? I don't think so. A properly set up loco fitted with radio control and with a boiler pressure commensurate with what it is being asked to do will also give smooth slow running p...

Re: Coal staithes, bins, cells .....

I think coal bins are the most wildly mis-modelled feature. Almost every layout I see shows coal bins with their backs to the track at a height level with the bottom of a wagon door. I think this is a self perpetuating error based on what modellers think should happen, not what actually did. I can't...

SM32 Minimum radius

What is the minimum recommended radius using Peco SM32 track for Roundhouse 0-4-0 locos and short wheelbase rolling stock such as tippers and 4 wheel box vans? I am guessing the problem is the loco chassis overhang and the effect it has on the couplings that will either be choppers or link and pin. ...

Roundhouse hybrid on Hambleden Valley

Here's the fifth and final loco in the Hambleden Fleet. Its an amalgamation of a lengthened and modified Roundhouse Katie body on a shortened Lady Anne chassis. Has new rear coal bunker, front running boards and other details, including a shortened chimney, a chuff pipe and a Slomo. See it in action...

Re: Boiler Certificates part 2

The Australian test document is now available on my web site: http://www.rhoshelyg.me.uk/RITG%20Boiler%20Tests.pdf Note that none of the boilers tested had a pressure gauge, which would surely be the first component to fail if pressurised beyond its design capabilities. So its not a boiler certific...

If my boiler bulged this much, I might think there was something wrong.

Re: Boiler Certificates part 2

I think we can close this discussion now as I feel I have achieved what I wanted, ie. much better clarity on what is, or is not, a mandatory requirement. Do I need to remove my boilers or gas tanks from my locos and take them to a boiler tester for an hydraulic test and get a certificate - No Do I n...

Re: Boiler Certificates part 2

At present there is not much point in addressing issues with the current code etc as it's going to be replaced soon anyway for the better. Although I don't personally ask to see people's boiler certs / steam test records for P'bro show it literally only takes one incident for the whole lot to be sh...

Re: Boiler Certificates part 2

Thank you Laurence for the clarification. I apologise if I have misrepresented the 16mm Association in anyway. Personally I don’t think it is very clear from the myriad of information available on line, exactly what is mandatory and what is a nice to have and there are far too many 'shoulds' and 're...

Re: Boiler Certificates part 2

Thanks for the link Tony, never have bothered to look into it but I found this part interesting: A steam test should be carried out and documented by the owner every 12 months in order to ensure the correct operation of the safety valve at the correct release pressure. This should be recorded on a ...

Re: Boiler Certificates part 2

someone needs to check the terms and conditions relating to public liability cover. I don't think it is sufficient to say just because you are a 16mm member you automatically have unconditional cover. Knowing insurance companies, this seems extremely unlikely. I note the following from the 16mm webs...

Re: Boiler Certificates part 2

The problem is to do with running in public events correct? So this will come down to each individual event/insurance company and what they require and so nothing to do with any organisation imposing any rule? Most of us don't run publicly so it isn't a problem... Yes, it is public events and Model...

Boiler Certificates part 2

As my previous post seems to have drawn little comment, lets try this one instead: I do not think the 16mm Association and G scale Society have done enough to stop MELG and the Federation of Model Engineers imposing their necessary rules on us. 5in, 7in, 10in etc locos are usually built by model eng...

Re: boiler certificates!

still so sensible conclusion yet. Most documentation I have seen is all about new boilers and how to do a hydraulic test. Not much mention of older existing commercially made boilers. Examination & Testing miniature steam boilers 2012 effective 1st Jan 2013 (over 4 years ago now) says it is not ...

Re: small 16mm loco Boiler Certificates

The MELG code seems to be a best practice guide including both legal requirements ("shall") and good advice ("should") but it is written as if it were a regulation; as far as I can see the scheme of written examination appears to be the only legal requirement for public use of sm...

Re: small 16mm loco Boiler Certificates

I think you are right Tony
Public display is for exhibitions and general public admission
Private layout and garden visits for invited friends is different and the regulations would not apply
I am still investigating. You know what H&S are like in this litigious society we have now become.

Re: small 16mm loco Boiler Certificates

This seems to be the latest info that I can find out: It now seems that all boilers used in public should have certification called a "written scheme of examination" (the H&S at Work Act 1974 and the Pressure System Safety Regulations 2000 combine to require this). Although not legally...
