When I did my L & B style Ragleth I put the servo and battery under the floor. RX, reverse servo in the side tank and the switch just inside the cab window. Pictures here : -

I've never used emery, but doesn't it leave marks on the letters, no matter how fine it is ? The method I've used several times is to paint the plate all over then, while it is still wet, rub gently over the face of it with a piece of smooth card - something like a postcard. You need to repeat two o...

Thanks for the kind comments. Graeme, Agreed, apart from the outside frames and the draughty cab, they look very similar. Here, looking a bit sad at Bressingham in 2014 http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm225/mollusc99/Garden%20Railway/IMG_2145.jpg Chris, Yes that's correct. In much the same way as...

Thanks for the comments. For my next little project I decided to go to the opposite extreme, in size and age, and give my rather neglected meths fired Lady Anne a bit of attention. This was my first loco, bought new around 1984, before I even had any proper track laid. I steamed it a few times up an...

Richard, I have used a Peter Spoerer lining pen to line a couple of locos and a couple of coaches. I have just started a thread called Winter projects in the Projects section showing a Roundhouse Garratt which I've just done. According to his website Peter doesn't sell these himself any more but a f...

Winter projects

Hi everybody, It's a long time since I've posted anything on here. I keep up with what's going on but I just haven't had anything to contribute. Construction of the railway ground to a halt some time back, mainly because the workforce (i.e. me) keeps getting hijacked onto other non-railway projects....

Congratulations on your new loco. 1) I always drain any remaining water. I'm not sure whether it matters, I'm sure someone else will tell you. 2) you mean one of these http://www.track-shack.com/acatalog/Goodall-water-top-up-valves-ZAP_21766.html Trouble is you've got no way of knowing how much wate...

I make the total wheelbase about 393mm. So add to that whatever you consider a safe margin either end.

The OP lives in Vienna - do they have Halfords there??
Oops, didn't notice that, but I'm sure they do car repairs in Austria, there must be a similar aerosol etch primer available, even if that isn't.

I've used U-POL Acid 8 Etch Primer from Halfords. Also available on e-bay, Amazon etc. Seems to work fine.

There will be a lot of us impatient to see your progress on this project.

Super job, Rob - and I love the shed ! That is very similar to what I have planned, although I have a slightly bigger area to play with. I have a station area already in a similar position with the track laid on concrete blocks within a raised flower bed. On the right hand side I have a section usin...

Hi Annie, I am fascinated by articulated locos too, though the number of different types and variations can be quite bewildering. I think this is what is often known as a Kitson Meyer with the bogies separated to allow the firebox in between. The bogies are powered by their own cylinders so I guess ...

Hi Peter, I know you followed my thread a while back about my Great Eastern brake third which I've been cosmetically restoring. You probably didn't think then that you'd have your own to do ! It looks like a similar project in a similar condition, although you've got an extra 9ft to do. Like yours, ...

I know the Lynton and Barnstaple loco name plates were about 6 inches high. You don't say if you're modelling a particular prototype, if not then whatever looks right is right. These are Narrow Planet plates I had made for my Roundhouse Alco. They are 8mm high (i.e. 6 inches in the real world). To m...

Dan, Nice to meet you on Saturday and thanks for rearranging delivery of the Garratt. It arrived safe and sound this morning. For those interested here are a couple of quick pictures taken on a rather dull afternoon. I have to say it's a much browner colour than I was expecting from Crimson Lake but...

Next one that is coming is in Crimson Lake, so watch this space :thumbright: I think the customer of it is also a member here... I guess that would be mine. I hope I like it in Crimson Lake, it's very difficult to visualise before you actually see it. I must admit it does look good in blue ! ! Brian

What a transformation! What colour did you paint it originally? The red you've used looks quite similar to the GER red carriage colour anyway... I was trying to match the colour of this coach which I think is at the East Anglian Railway Museum, but it is very hard to match a colour on a computer sc...

Thanks Philip.
The whole bench is new and made by a firm called Procast Foundry in Yorkshire. They cast the ends in iron and also make the seatback nameplates for any name you want in cast aluminium. They supply benches to heritage railways and also cast nameplates for full size locomotives.

It's been a little while but here's an update for those that are interested. After the weather broke in October I just did what I could to protect the coach from the winter weather and came indoors till the spring came. But since it turned a bit milder I've managed to crack on quite well. I wanted t...
