I bought a Bertie too!!!

Post by mhlr » Sun Aug 17, 2008 11:54 pm

As you may have seen on my recent video, I purchased a Bertie off a fellow member for £250 (HAHA BEAT THAT ahem sorry!), and it has most the upgrades except cylinder cross head thingy, brass dome and chimney cap, top up n water gauge, new buffer beams and sprung buffers. It's painted in Humbrol French Blue, and has a working rear pair of doors (which I will paint blue, dont worry!). Ran it after everyone went, runs great, good enough probably not to fit R/C! CAN I USE BUTANE PROPANE MIX IN IT? (has anyone used it in theirs?) Here's pix!

In my personal opinion it now needs a few more cosmetic upgrades to make it look a little less basic! Apart from that, I think you got a steal! £250?!?!? Sorry to say, but I think Cecil still beats that with his £100 Mike Beeson loco he got at Stoneleigh, but this comes in a close second!

I think you get first prize Bungle, but Simon bought it for you, so you loose points!

Now that's bloody obvious!!! That's a steal AND a kick in the b***s to the seller!

It's gunna have plenty done on it. Going to paint the connecting rods red, perhaps by the cross head set from R.H., lamp + other running plate clutter, paint the yellow doors blue, maybe line out, etc etc...

Mines gonna be even nicer when cecil finishes doing the cosmetic work he's doing for me as a thanks for all the work i've done on the extension work to the PTLR! All I can say is Caledonian blue (almost), jalf cab roof and back sheet with bunker, proper roundhouse cowcatcher!! With white lining! Lets just say it'll look the mutts nutts! And thank goodness the bling bling blue has gone!

That looks like a lovely little loco Pete, I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it :D

Looks great, hope you have fun running it.

Ok, so I paid somewhat more, but I did get some 'free' rolling stock and other bits and bobs.

Really happy with mine, so hope you will be too.

So far I have only used pure butane. Instructions say only to use butane, but notice their website says that up to 30% propane is ok for some of the locos.

I got the butane in B&Q in the plumbing section.

I wouldn't use Butane / Propane Mix in a Roundhouse Loco. The mix gas burns a little higher temperature. I think with repeated use it could cause problems to the boiler and boiler fittings.

Is the sight glass added by the previous owner or was this an option fitted by roundhouse?

Also in the cab there's a sort of manifold fitted to the top of the boiler, there's an outlet for the regulator and also another outlet coming out at 45 degrees to it, is that being used or is it just blanked off?

Lovely looking loco, I bet it's a super runner too! :D

Boring, switch on and off they go!! (soz, I had to say that  - sell ur SL1 and get a decent diesel then!)

Alan, yeah, thats the top up valve going off at 45 degrees. The gauge is a option, its a kit with the top up valve.

I went out and bought some butane (managed to find some finally in the whelms of B&Q!!!). Been running most of the afternoon, but had a few derailments on my steep downgrade where it's run away. Still need to grips with manual control! Perhaps once my curves are smoothed out, it will be smoother running. Here's some pics from today after the rods been painted red, and a 16mmngm Special Train (headboard - I broke my pinbadge!!!);
