New ANLR motive power, and a farewell

Post by laalratty » Fri Jun 29, 2012 8:46 pm

Today was a busy day for the Afonglas and Nant Llywyd Railway, with a delievery by private courier this morning, followed by the general manager going into university to get his exam results (see off topic). On my return, a new NWAG member was ready to test run my Caradoc with the intention of purchaseing it and finally ridding me of this loco (I should say that it is massively improved following its visit to the PTLR workshops early this year, but its reputation with me was ruined and I've had enough of it)
Anyway, to the new purchase.....

Well its from Roundhouse then...!
I'm going to keep quiet for the moment about what it is for the moment, surfice to say I've been dropping some hints on this forum recently whenever I've seen pics of this loco!

Whatever it is, if you passed your exams, it is a reward for a job well done.

I did much the same when I graduated from college back 20 years ago, doing what any sane college grad should do, I bought myself a 1969 Citroen DS21...much to my joy and parents dismay.

I'm pretty sure I know what it is...and if I'm I'm right, then I must say you've made an excellent choice 8)

I think it's about time to spill....

Yep, its a Russel in a livery that perhapes looks a little odd, but there is reasoning! Mainly its an implementation of "it's my loco on my railway and I'll do what the heck I like!" However, this is also the closest green Roundhouse do to Ffestiniog green and I wanted to put it into something close to Ffestiniog style lining, like my Millie. So a nice bit of hypothetical "what might have been", although of course for Russel to be preserved on the Ffestiniog in this condition with full cab Garnedd tunnel would have to be enlarged somewhat!
Anyway, here are some pics of the first run yesterday

I've already done some mods with the paintbrush, the wheels are now black on the strict advice of TonyW and I did Urien's whilst I was at it. The coal rails are also black, but there is a long way to go yet. But overall I am delighted with the loco :)

I like the colour, seems to suit it well, however the boiler dome seems to look really big!

Will look superb with some lining :)

Very nice. And good to know I guessed right, albeit not on colour- I had black in my mind's eye for some reason. Suits it. I've never been too keen on red locos.

If you look at the L&B Lyd the dome looks big and shiny on that as well:

Personally, I think Russel can carry it off I as it is a large loco, however, I found the dome too shiny on my SL so I painted it black:

The loco suits your line which I really like - have fun with her :)

And yes, all loco's should have black wheels ;)

Cheers,

Tom

But the LNER non-streamlined Pacifics are among the best engines of all time, and they have green wheels - at least, when painted in the correct shade of green...! ;)

Lovely engine Ratty - despite my prelove of apple green I'm also a fan of FfR green and I think it will suit the engine very well. I look forward to the finished product 8)
