I am now extremely pleased and proud to confirm that the Compton Down Railway will live on and merge with the Llechfan Garden Railway in the grounds of Tywyn Station on the Talyllyn Railway.
Many, many years ago Dad went as a boy to the TR and it was the inspiration for the original Compton Down and continued to act as the prototype for many more Compton cameos.
The brickworks, slateworks and outer circuit will remain on the original site and continue to see regular trains - the rest of the buildings and the fabric of CDR will be absorbed into the landscape at Llechfan - and much of the stock has gone there to continue to run past its' familiar haunts.
Work has begun on the first concrete footings for the new Compton Down Station and plans are afoot for Llanbedr Road Terminus, mine workings & wharf. The industrial sector has been earmarked and everything else will be dotted about where it seems to fit best.
This will take a while..... many of the timber buildings are in need of TLC before they go back out into the elements - they look better than I would if I'd been outside 10-20 years but are in need of some fortification.
The church of St Bunnys now stands proudly (if temporarily) in its' new grounds at the entrance to Llechfan. It too needs some solidification and a concrete plinth to stand tall on but is wonderful to see it find a loving home.
Details of Llechfan running days will start to appear on their website soon as will news of the move.
There will still be things to sort... access across the TR tracks needs careful thought. We hope to attract fellow enthusiatics to come & run but be warned....don't stand still too long or we might get you on concreting duties....
