Britomart

A very popular starting point for Live Steam. With their low cost comes a number of problems which can be discussed here

Britomart

Post by DolwyddelanLightRail » Sat Dec 26, 2009 11:17 am

As some of you may know, I am currently overhauling my Golden Jubilee Mamod, H.G.Butler, now in the overhaul process, I had to swap the jubilee mamods chassis with my MSS "Britomart" (which I originally bought to put H.G.Butler into preservation.) so I could steam the chassis without damaging any of the paintwork

Britomart has now recently failed (as in been dragged down with H.G.Butler) and now she's really in bits, I was wondering of making a few "adjustments" to her. Heres a pic for people who don't know:

Now I know some people may contradict me in saying "The Real Britomart is light blue" (or something like that) that is a future project (the main reason why I named it britomart is becuase the mamod whistle reminds me of britomart). What I am thinking of doing is painting the inside of the cab the cream colour like on the FR, and also cutting the detachable backplate (isn't shown) just above the handrails and taking the roof off so it has a cab like Edrig.

1. Which is the easiest way of cutting the backplate
2. what paints should I use?

any other suggestions welcome! :D :D

all the joints were pretty weak in the first place, I don't think it'll make any difference!

I think brit will run now, it's just that I don't have anything thats giving off enough heat to steam her properly at the moment!

I cut the back plate on an MSS down with a hacksaw way above the intended line and then filed it down to the correct level. I took the roof off and cut off the top roof side support bits. The loco belongs to a friend and I sent it off after having spent months scratching my head and ordering new pieces for it (Its a long and irritating story) to dream steam who are currently seeing to it. I'll get some pics as soon as possible. Just go in with a saw no where near where you need to cut it down to and finish it off with a file. This avoids embarasing mistakes!

You need some way of supporting the half back too somehow, that will allow you to take the half back off to access the burner etc.

hmmm, I was just thinking of beding the locating tabs back on them selves. The burner can allways be slid out from the bottom of the loco if it is meths an dthe small bolt be accessed with small pliers.

made the back to Columbine from tinplate, it has tabs at the bottom to locate into the original slots, and at the top, it clips onto that spring clip.

You can use just normal humbrol or spray paint etc for the cab.

Today I have cleaned her up from the failed run she had with tablets, so she was really dirty, so i disassembled the tanks and boiler from the chassis etc and I cleaned her up, and while re-assembling, I thought that she will be better with the cab roof still on, but with the detachable bit half cut above the handrails, and this may in the future be a possibiliy to add a small coal holder
