Paint on Mamod Locos
Paint on Mamod Locos
Do you need to use heat resistant paint on the bodywork (cab tanks etc) of the Mamod locos????

The modified Mamod shown here:-

was first sprayed with heat resistent semi-matt black paint, and then I added panels of Humbrol blue on the front of the tanks, sides of the tanks and cab sides. I was a bit dubious of how it would stand the heat, but the loco was steamed many times and the Humbrol paint is as good now as it was when first applied. I did thin down the Humbrol paint quite a bit--trying to avoid brush marks, and applied 3 coats with a brush. I had expected it to look awful, but to my surprise it came up very well. I had also worried about how the oil paint on (cellulose based? ) heat resistant paint would react. A trial on a piece of metal proved that there would be no problem.
