The One Square Yard Garden Railway

Post by RylstonLight » Tue Sep 17, 2013 10:08 am

A recent quote in another thread started me thinking: ([quote="METHSSNIFFER:88534"]44 guests viewing and only 6 signed in. Sign in register and contribute If it wasnt for just the few there wouldnt be this forum>>)

I am also a long term reader mainly to offset the stresses of a busy life that precludes regular modelling let alone regular posting.

However I agree that it is unfair that not all readers are prepared to post. So here is the nearest thing I have to a garden railway at present.

The main use is a a "stage" to photograph models on.

the black & white photo is very effective and you really wouldn't know it wasn't part of permanent garden railway.

I ought to add that I have actually run the IP in the B&W photo on the "line". Not yet risked live steam though!!

That's a nice little "stage" - I tend to use my patio table for "official" photos and pictures of work in progress, as you need an uncluttered background for those. Now, of course, you've got to lay a circle of track around the barrel, and you've got yourself a line to run on!

The Rylston Light Railway tends to take its official photographs in the workshop. They really ought to clear some of the clutter before doing so; whatever would Mr Isle would make of it ?

The workshops are pretty much as they were in the 50's but the wheelie bin in the back ground betrays that this B&W photo was actually faked to look old and was really taken in the noughties.

Thanks, here's another corner. I'm not sure Mr Isle would approve of that notice board with the HSE statement that someone has taken down.

Wow! You've got a very nice eye for detail there, the b&w shots set them off nicely! :D

Fantastic work! I hope some day to achieve half that level of work. But that will even take some doing.

TOP NOTCH! :thumbright:

When I started reading your thread, my immediate thoughts were "good on you" for making the time and taking the effort to contribute :D
As I followed it through as far as your excellent photo's, all I can say now is "can we have some more please?" ;)

Hi

I'm so glad you had the time to post and although you havent got a garden railway its very nice to see and hear your interest in the pursuit of the hobby. Everyone starts somewhere and forums like this help and encourage progression, though it is understandable with work and family commitments some cant. I hope in time the flower tub line develops and becomes your inspired and perfect railway delivering scale barrels from brewery to pub.
Best wishes

Ash

Actually, Ash, the barrels are incoming into the factory - carrying vinegar for the pickling process. I'm sure you've heard of Rylston Pickle. Unfortunately the factory shifted to road transport in the late 60's. I do have an early colour print of the back of the factory, but no railway anywhere near in site.

also a more recent colour slide of the workshop detail is from preservation days

And here is a much earlier photograph of No 2 Tom on Little Weigton Bank.

Wot he said!

Thankyou for sharing- some of the most atmospheric 16mm photos I've seen.

For those struggling to find room for a G scale or 16mm/ft railway it might be worth looking at the website linked below. This was started some time ago by an american Carl Arendt. Unfortunately Carl died but the website is kept running by his relatives and supported by some appreciative enthusiasts.
I appreciate this is mainly targeted at smaller scale models but some of the ideas could be used at all scales.

Some really fantastic looking photographs there, and you really wouldn't believe that the first couple were taken on 'the stage'! A very talented modeller me thinks! :D

Thank you all for your very kind feedback.

As you may have realised I have had a line in the garden in the past. I still try to add to my stock of models to kick-start any future garden line.

The pickle factory is work in progress; carved out of aerated concrete. The workshop is a stage wher every wall can be removed so I can take photographs from any orientation. This has sat by the side of my armchair for 10years and has gradually increased the clutter over the years.

Below is the interior of the running shed, again work in progress, this time cast in jigstone moulds. The outside has not been finished yet.

This is as far as I can go currently; other than rolling stock. But it has been a pleasure sharing with you.
