Steaming in your garden: Tag Gorton

I've been looking at various books about garden steam engines, and have decided I would like to read "Steaming in your garden" by Tag Gorton. Mostly the book appeals to me because it has the unusual sight of a Roundhouse Billy with a tender on the cover.

On "Amazon.UK" there are two copies available, but on "Amazon.ca" (the Canadian one) it says temporarily unavailable.

I'm skeptical. They are more than willing to take my money to pre-order the book, but I am not so sure about the temporary part. I'm suspicious it might be PERMANENTLY unavailable.

Mr Gorton, if you're there, do you think I should pre-order this book, or find another way to get a copy, such as begging someone to sell me their used copy? I'd like to read it.

Does anyone have a copy they'd like to part with? I don't have a railway, and all I do is look at my Billy-with-a-tender (the winsome little engine in my "avatar" picture) sitting on the shelf with its wagons and wish I had a garden to put a railway in. I really could use a copy of that book.

I think some of these books are out of print, either for a while or maybe awaiting an update, Tag will have to settle that.

What you can do is order the items from Amazon.co.uk, I have done it several times for books, CDs and DVDs (I have a hacked DVD player) and have never had a problem getting items to the USA.

From Amazon, you should be able, if it a second party vendor, you may or may NOT be able to, it will show if you can at checkout.

I think the one you want is "Garden railways in focus", it has a maroon 0-6-0 William (I think) with tender on the cover.

This one should still be available from the Atlantic website. What WILL be available shortly is a reprint of Live Steam Workshop.

It has been out of print for a great many years I am afraid... There are more modern books that will help you plan and construct your railway. My own up to date recommendation for this would be Peter Jones' book 'Practical Garden Railways'. I hope in the fullness of time to undertake more books – but time at the moment militates against this...

I found Live steam workshop the most helpfull book when I first started tinkering, good to see it coming back, I'm sure it will sell well again.

I wasn't so much looking for a book of tips as just a book with some pictures and facts about garden steam engines. There really is a "Billy" on the cover of the one I'm thinking about.

Well, the other books look nice too. I'm really just looking for a way to stay interested in the hobby between the times I can actually run a train... not very often.

The photo on the cover of Steaming in Your Garden was taken on an NWAG line no less, the Silverdale Light Railway (south), at Silverdale Junction station. This was before my time though I think!
