Roundhouse Paints

Post by bluewater1150 » Thu Dec 01, 2011 5:07 pm

Hi all, I am needing small touch up pots of two Roundhouse colours,
Victorian Maroon BS541 and their Signal Red RAL3001 - used on their loco buffer beams. They sell neither to the public. I've tried searches on both Humbrol and Precision paints with no luck.
Has anyone found an outlet for these paints or a website that gives equivalents?

Many thanks
Elliot

Hi Elliot,

You can use Halfords RAL3001 for the buffer beams.

As for the body. It's pretty unquie as it's mixed at the time the batch is made. What's been chipped/damaged? If it's bad I would send it off to a professional or RH themselves.

Cheers,

Tom

Tom,,
Thanks for the Halfords' lead. The signal red is to touch up the buffer beam hex bolt heads that replaced the screws and the maroon for a small chip, above the LHS cab door way, where it meets the black cab roof, there is 2 x small nuts on the undersdie of the roof that touch the cab side when you open the cab roof - without first lifting it 1/4" - and then there's the 4" scratch I made when fitting the working whistle - I'm joking thank God.

If their Victoria Maroon is really BS381c 541 Crimson, then Humbrol gloss Crimson #20 is theoretically the same colour.

That said, the last tin I bought was markedly darker (too much blue) than the tins I've been using for the last 20 years and no longer closely matches the BS381C colour card.

For touching up nicks it may be near enough, or you may need a touch of gloss black #21, or a touch of gloss bright red #19.

The nearest Humbrol red to RAL3001 is #19, but it isn't very close. Revell do a Ferrari Red #34 which is supposed to be RAL3001.

Theoretically a lot of Humbrol colours, especially the older ones, are taken from BS381c, but I don't much trust their quality control lately. With modern paint lab instruments, there should be no discernable difference batch to batch, which Humbrol don't seem to manage.......

The chart on this website gives colour matches for just about every known model paint and includes the RAL, FS and BS381c references as well. The pdf doc can be downloaded and searched, but the online chart can be sorted by columns like a spreadsheet.

If you start tinting colours, make sure you do it in the light the model will be viewed under. Diffuse daylight in the case of garden railways (a cloudy day shouldn't be difficult in the UK). Definitely don't do it under fluorescent lights, or tungsten bulbs, or the colours will differ when you go outside.

Regards,
Graeme

Or you could just leave it? Your engine is bound to keep on picking up knocks and scratches through its working life, and the real ones do as well! :)

Quote the BS code to a auto paint mixer, they will mix that colour to an exact match.

Anyone who can recommend a Humbrol color as a substitute to BS227 (Deep Brunswick green)?

I have tried Humbrol no 3 - Brunswick Green, and I think this was close enough.

Humbrol #3 is Middle Brunswick Green, so a little lighter in tone, which is no bad thing for painting models.

There are some paint shops that will actually make the exact shade you want. My Katie is mid brunswick green, and when we scratch built a tender for it, we took the engine down a paint shop in Gloucester and they made the exact colour! In spray can form aswell!
Have a look down some of the specialised paint shops, and some MOT garrages will also make paint for you.
Cheers.

Here is a picture of my Billy in Deep Brunswick Green with a coalbunker painted with Humbrol no 3 Brunswick Green.
I think the colors match very nice.

That's an excellent match, as cameras will generally emphasise small colour differences.

My tin of Humbrol #3 is lighter than the BS591C colour card for deep brunswick green, but it is also an old tin. Which probably means Humbrol have recently changed yet another colour I use..... sigh!!!

Neat job on the bunker conversion. Gives Billy something of the appearance of a sawn-off Sir Dreffaldwyn on the W&L.

Graeme
