What is the best way to lay a track base?

I have found the most common and long lasting is to lay a course of bricks and mortar and screw the track down on top.

Anyone know of a simpler, less skilled way as I do not have the skill or the means to lay bricks

I had a load of spare paving slabs, that I layed in a trench with cement, and then screwed the track to it...

For my railway I've used a concrete base that has been cast using hardboard shuttering that has been set to the right height. The shuttering is screwed into pegs, and the pegs are knocked into the ground. If I can find a picture i'll post but I didn't take many photos of my railway under construction (The latest bit used this method and Thermolite blocks laid on end with the track screwed to this)
