As featured in extreme steam..

what did pass for character is now just plain falling off paintwise, just wondering if any recommendations for what paint to use.

Not going for sparkly shiny nut & bolt resto here - Sir Compton far too old to do Lamb impressions - just aiming for a subtle smarten up of a moth eaten suit...

All advice gratefully received :D

Humbrol enamels can stand up to heat quite well. We paint 7 1/4 smokeboxes with them no probs. Pheonix precision paints are another good one.

Does Sir Compton have a lubricator?

Hi Will.... no lubricator..uses MK1 hand operated oil bottle only, is pretty much standard Mamod underneath that lot... only real difference is wick burner with meths tank to fit the standard 'ole.

Thanks for tip on Humbrol - had wondered if favourite but not sure of heatproof qualities..

Humbrol enamel is reasonably heatproof- certainly it's OK on an internally gas fired boiler. But I don't know how it'll cope on an externally fired loco. Does the saddle tank act as a firebox?

Suppose at about £1.50 a tin, there's no harm in trying it!

we also discovered that Halfords spray paint will stay on a smokebox without going wrong. I was quite surprised by that one. You can get VHT paints in various shades which would take the heat (hence Very High Temp!)

Humbrol paint will work fine.

Warm the loco up before painting and put the paint tin in a pot of warm water for 10 mins before painting. This makes the paint run better and prevents brush marks!

excellent! many thanks for that, was wondering how well could hide any brush marks.

Yes is Kenversions - this one was made for Dad (or so I'm told) The saddle tank is lined with insulation so stands a better chance of paint surviving - is very standard mamod workings underneath - has a water filler valve which is handy
