H.G.Butlers First run in Over 2 years!

Post by DolwyddelanLightRail » Sat Jan 23, 2010 7:32 pm

Well, after 3 months of work, the Dolwyddelan Quarry Line's managers decided to run some passenger services on the line. The loco roster was:
Working locos:
No.449 H.G.Butler
No.450 Britomart
Standby Loco:
No.451 Edrig
Britomart was fired on blocks to begin with, but failed due to the whistle letting all the steam out, then H.G.Butler was run, and ran beautifully! and then Edrig had to take over because i ran out of meths, now from the story line to the pictures:

The two locos looking glorious with the shining brass in the sun!

Edrig's ready for anything!

and i didn't notice that it started to rain, leaving Edrig sulking in the wet!

I have never actually had a mamod sv blow off this much!

Image

Plenty of steam around, and also did the best mamod runaway ever! (which'll appear in the upcoming vid!)

Image

Still a slight piston leak going backwards, but it's minor!

Stranded with low water and no pressure because I had run out of meths completely!!!!!        :x  So I had to now light Edrig to rescue the passengers!

But in the mean time, i couldn't resist taking more photos!

buy a top up value see you can keep it in steam all day

thats what i'm going to do, the whistle is off, and i'm going to get new buffer beams with the single buffer from dream steam as well, and i am tempted to get a reg control for h.g.butler, as you'll see in the vid (coming later), the speed really does need controlling!

Rest of the pics now!

Edrig coupling up

Annoyingly there was quite a large leak from the pressure gauge, and the gas was a pain as it wouldn't light properly, which meant to took 15mins to get enough pressure to move, but after a while it sort of kicked in......

Image

De-steaming

Image

and after the second steaming, i noticed the smokebox door wasn't looking right....

Image

The paint has peeled off :? :? :? :|

Edrig on blocks to try to sort out the leak on the pressure gauge

     :?

What it looks like now, I actually like it like this, as it makes it more personalised!

But i did wonder why it did this!

Wonderfull, looks like you need to turn the gas down a little there. I allways try to keep the pressure really low and the gas nearly inaudiable unless I am snowploughing or it is cold!
That way you waste less steam. With a leak on the pressure gauge though I dont suppose you had much choise!

I couldn't turn the gas down very much as it was a dodgy can, and if i did, the fire would just go out, in realy struggled to keep it alight today!

repaint the box with hight temp paint matt black and put mess of the buner and dont light up out side it to cold and take a long time also shut the drain when light up whaen you have a pound if pressure then open the vaule reliseing the water that been forces out by the water i have ran my edrig for five year there a number of trick to make then run better

I'd save up and invest in the boiler set for the HG Butler, cus the increased pressure can bu99er original boilers after a while - it has on mine! Comes with all the bits you need too.

Edrig, the jet assembly at the rear looks very odd too. :? Mine never went like that, although I wouldn't know now as I painted all that stuff in the cab, black.

I am trying to keep HG Butler as original as possible, so I am not going to run it as much as I used to run Britomart or Edrig to avoid unnessecary damage etc
