Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1
The driver blanks were roughed out in the Blue Lathe. Plod as usual over estimated the material sizes and used far too much steel and thus a terrible quantity of swarf is being generated.
Then it is to the Red Room and onto the 254s

Plod got some discs out and thought it was time this obscure one got a spin.

Plod uses the Crobalt Eccentric tools for good finish work. Economical compared to insert tooling and easy to sharpen and polish the bit off on 1000 then 1500 grit. Reset to hight to 0.01mm with the dial gauge set up for setting the tool off the top slide.

Plod still has the 1/4" wheel turning spindle in the drawers so out it came and it was set up in the grip true chuck and clocked. (P&B 3 draw that can be trued, or one can get the jaw out)

Then the blanks are turned to thickness and next will be the tread profiles. If all goes well it will one week from start to go and a se of Garratt wheels are done.

gaRrAtTInG has HAS hAs HaS Plod's cranium heated up with Solidworks and the key board, he claims it is not affecting him at AT aT At ATT aLl ? However he took the Llewellyn #1 drawing, did some minor alterations and sent some prints to the workshop team. The leader of this flock puzzles over Plod's amateur drafting attempts and ponders the four cylinders to be released from this stick of LG2 bronze. As least some of the team are keeping it together.

Cylinder machining has began, well at least the bar clean up. Plod is pondering making his own slomo mechanisms as he will be cosmic dust again before any can be sourced.

Captain Plod makes plodding progress on the Garratt cylinders.

The use of a brand new never used 3/8" reamer created a bore that was a bit iffy. So Plod sleeved it and used a brand new Dormer brand reamer for it and the other cylinders.

A strong Brownian Motion Solution

DRO on a mill/drill, a beautiful thing.

I think you’re doing a superb job there mate.
Your technical drawings are brilliant too. You are putting some time into it aren’t you. Isn’t it summertime down there now.? Mind you there temperature is probably about right to be working with metal. Not too hot and not too cold.

Thanks. It is 30 -35 degrees during the day and very humid and most afternoons evenings we are getting no end of brutal thunderstorms. 10cm hail has created havoc around SE Queensland. Smashed roofs, wreckage of cars and trees down, solar panels destroyed. A good friend had all her windows removed in her house. We miss the best of the brutal storms just where we are, sort of a sheltered corner but a few kms away, err yukk. However hail the other day about 10mm in size.
I learnt the basic pencil drafting in high school circa 1977. Everything is self taught, CAD, metal work. I use the CAD program to a level I need, I am in no sense proficient and or professional. I am enjoying this Garratt project so far after 16 months of the recent rescue mission for my mother who has a life time of Schizophrenia. I just could not face painting # 1 just yet. I needed an enjoyable project, the Garratt is inspired by my annual trips crewing on the FFWHR.

The cylinder blocks progress

Plod is a fan or Quad Rings rather than O rings for the reciprocating movements such as pistons and piston rods. This one on Plod's finger is for the 1/8" piston rod gland packing. The valve rod gland will have to be an O ring to the 1.6mm diameter

The cylinder covers are next to be the swarf creations

There will be no Red Room action this weekend as Plod is crewing the big Choo Choo at the Mary Valley Rattler

Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1
In senior school, in my day it was called secondary modern, I was top in my class for technical drawing. I loved it, it just kind of came naturally to me. Yet where did I go when I left school, a blooming bakery for 2 1/2 years out of a 3 year apprenticeship. Why did I leave, my mates were getting 3 times more money than I was and I job came up in engineering, that’s what I did for 35 years until I was fed up of getting made redundant 3 times. It was the best decision I ever made though, I loved working in engineering and what you do brings back so many memories.
I watch your work and I appreciate the time and effort you put into it and even more so knowing that you are mostly self taught. You are an inspiration for others to follow Mate.
Hope MAM is well and looking after the garden and her work in her ceramic creations is keeping her busy.
Take care and stay safe both..

Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1
Thankyou all for the nice compliments. I am inspired by the great Model Engineers such as the late Cherry Hill. Aspire is the correct description because I am not going to get to that level. I like sharing and if one can learn from each other that just adds a wee bit of pleasure to everyone's life involved.

Cylinder covers being parted off. A special split bush/ collet will be made to hold these to face clean the parted off surface.
