Material suggestions - 16mm scale coloured/patterned glass

Post by StuartJ » Mon Nov 03, 2025 10:29 pm

Can anyone suggest a suitable material for 16mm scale coloured and/or patterned glass used in clerestory windows please? I'm thinking of something like the patterned plastic trays that some chocolate biscuits used to come in but I think these are all (quite rightly) cardboard now.

My backup plan is scotch tape on the back of acetate to represent plain 'white' frosted glass, but I'd rather something like the coloured glass in these Manx Electric cars:

Acrylic sheet is available in transparent colours, as well as solid colours and clear.

Some plastics distributors will cut sheets, but ones that will cut small sizes are getting harder to find. A quick ebay search found a few local (Aust.) suppliers of A4 size pieces of transparent orange sheet and/or clear textured sheet. Presumably there are similar UK suppliers.

Alternatively Tamiya have a handful of transparent coloured paints that could be used to colour whatever clear plastic you use for glass windows in your passenger stock.

I've used the Tamiya transparent orange paint in the past to tint white LEDs to better simulate the colour of oil lamps and low voltage electric lights. Never tried them for simulating coloured glass, as my clerestory cars have simulated opal glass made by painting the inside of the clear window with light grey paint.

You could try 'frosting' some clear sheet by lightly rubbing it with fine wet n dry, then use permanent felt tips to colour the frosted face with whatever design you are after.

I recently came across this video where they created a stained glass effect using clear plastic sheet scuffed with some sandpaper, covered in Matt mod podge sealer and coloured with colouring pencils. Looks to give a subtle tone akin to those Manx cars, with the mod podge providing a bit of texture to the surface.

Probably a bit more complicated than you need, but I printed stained glass designs on to self adhesive clear acetate sheet and stuck them on to 1mm thick clear acetate for the top lights on my Leek & Manifold(ish) coaches

Thanks all
Discussions elsewhere have suggested coloured plastic document wallets, many of which have a textures or patterns as well. I'll have a stationery shopping expedition and see what I can find.

Stuart,

Stage lighting gels are available in many colours and I can let you have some.

Send me a PM,

Phil
