A Slightly Larger Ford-powered Project

Post by Old Man Aaron » Sat Jun 15, 2024 12:00 pm

With my car finished, I've finally been able to return to volunteering at the Woodford Railway in QLD. If there's any interest, I'll post the occasional thread on restorations, new projects and eventually, a long-overdue return to steam.

The Malcolm Moore loco we use as a guard's van, lives outdoors, permanently-coupled to our small passenger rake. We have another on display.
Like many things scattered around a struggling heritage line, it's been a slowly-deteriorating eyesore for many years.
Over the last 10 years, we've come a very long way in cleaning up and improving our museum and station site. A cosmetic restoration for the loco will make another improvement to our public image, and help preserve the loco for another 80 years.

This will involve stripping all paint back to bare metal, a few minor rust repairs, patching up those holes cut into the roof for headlights, (that were never fitted) re-instating the original headlight on the bonnet, and a total repaint.

Oh and, we run every other Sunday, so this loco can't spend months in the workshop. I have to do this outdoors, and work in small sections so that no bare metal is left exposed to the weather between Saturday work sessions.

When we acquired the two locos from the Australian Army in the 1980s, this tin of NOS Army Green was supplied with them.
We're not going to use this museum piece (likely lead paint anyway) so after much faffing about with Bunnings, I had it colour matched.

The slatted timber driver's seat has since been fitted with a pair of old bus seat cushions we used in a carriage in the 1990s. Makes our volunteer guards' lives more pleasant. These cushions however are blue, look entirely out of place, and are badly weathered besides.

I took a spare cushion to a local upholstery shop and had them make a pair of replacements in brown marine vinyl.
For whatever reason, they only made one complete cushion, and one cover. For what they charged me, I'll finish the second one myself.

Back when I bought my car in early 2022, I started working on the loco in earnest. "I can come down here every weekend now, I'll get it knocked out in a month or two!" - This of course was before I learned what a pig I'd bought.

In the meantime, I still occasionally made it down to Woodford over 2022. Spending most of a day stripping a panel with wire wheels, then frantically trying to get it primed and packed up before sundown. Trying to get the loco done for our 50th anniversary day in September.

Well, that came and went. It's still not finished.

Since finally getting back on the road in February, and down to Woodford most weekends, I've been giving the workshop a decades-overdue cleanout. Frankly it was in a deplorable and unworkable state.
Hard to (or want to) get anything done when you spend 90 minutes a day scouring the site for basic tools.

That's just about done, so at the end of tomorrow's running day, the 'Moore will be shunted into the workshop for the 3-weekend gap before next running day. I'll have the roof off with the gantry crane, weld it up, and get it stripped and primed.
I'd even like to get it topcoated while it's out of the weather. See how I go..

More photos tomorrow or Monday..

Nice work Aaron, if it was closer I'd come and give you a hand. How is the flat head V8 holding up?

Crusty, but it's in there. The loco's a runner, but too thirsty for regular use.

I'd love to to a proper nut-and-bolt on the loco - I even have the correct Ford Green engine enamel leftover from the car.
The other 'Moore down at the gate has never been started, received by us in it's original crate, I'm told.
A volunteer stole it's gearbox decades ago, we've recently acquired a NOS replacement out of a Loyd Carrier. Here's hoping we don't touch that loco anytime soon - we don't need another in traffic, nor do we have the shed space for it, and the list of real priorities (most of which are already dismantled) will keep us busy for decades.

Didn't get the 'Moore into the workshop yesterday, but I did get the Ruston tarped over for it's short stay outside.

Five days of work (across two weeks) later, and the roof is finally repaired and ready to be lifted back into place.

The 1/16" / 1.6mm steel sheet is very hard to weld, you spend far more time fixing the holes you've blown through it, than actually making the repairs you set out to do.
Our stick welder does have a MIG mode, but we don't have the gas bottle needed for that. so 2.6mm sticks it was..
Lots of rusted out patches of gutter replaced.
Yesterday evening the roof was finished, and set up ready for lifting back in place on Tuesday.

With 6 days until next running day, the plan is:
Tuesday - refit roof, spray primer, prep clean and sand the rest of the loco
Thursday - topcoat entire loco in Army Green
Saturday - tie up loose ends and shunt loco back onto train

I will get the muffler, seat and signwriting etc. sorted in the coming weeks..

Well, over the past week (plus an extra trip down on Friday) I got it primed and painted. Today was it's first day back in traffic.

Ah! the ones that take the most time.
A great restoration and paint job Aaron, I'm sure your group will be very grateful for the time you have put in.
Grant.

Thanks fellas.
After almost 3 years since I started the job (and 9 years of looking at peeling yellow paint) It's a great feeling to see it looking presentable.
Spent yesterday chipping away at it again, I've started going down to Woodford 2 days a week.
I find once a week to be stifling, so 2 days is really fulfilling. How long I can keep that up remains to be seen, but in the meantime, I'm enjoying finally making a dent in the backlog. More pics once finished, in a couple weeks..

Well, I've left this one a bit late!
Starting a business and keeping busy at Woodford every weekend, left this thread forgotten on the backburner..
The loose ends were tied up and the loco now lives in the shed, out of the weather.
Image
Since taking this photo 2 months back, I've found the original front headlight, restored and fitted it. The (pictured) front light was moved to the rear.
I may paint unit markings on the sides below the seat, but have yet to find a better reference photo than the one I have..

In the meantime, work is proceeding on the next stalled project: That Ruston 40DL mentioned earlier in the thread..

That does look smart, Aaron. And very business-like.
