A brewery for Beeston Castle
A brewery for Beeston Castle
Having recently added a new siding to Beeston Castle Station, I decided the old siding could become the site for a brewery. As far as I know, there was never a brewery in the immediate area in which my railway is set, but I can imagine that, with the coming of the railway, one might have been set up.
I tried searching online for suitable pictures of brewery buildings, but couldn't find one which showed a whole building - just bits. In the end, I found a picture of the now discontinued Meltcalfe 00 scale brewery card kit which seemed as good as anything to inspire a generic brewery type building. .
As it will be brick-built, I've decided to use PVC foamboard again. However, as the site for the building is a bit awkward - triangular squeezed in against the hedge - I decided to use the corrugated card which wrapped the foamboard to make a mock-up. .
I've now test-fitted it into the site and realised I'll need to make a few adjustments to make it fit more comfortably. . .
I think it will work out OK. So now to start marking out the foamboard. I've already realised it's going to take more than I've already received, so another order is being placed.
Watch this space - as they say!

I love it Rik... there's no mistaking a brewery building, no matter what size.

I've even thought about brewing my own beer - Beeston's Best Bitter. It's many a year since I did a home brew.

Now there's an idea for our 16mm Association Local Area Group meetings! Just in case the railways get a bit boring.

That building is sure going to involve a lot of brick scribing. How will you stop the hedge from pushing it forward
as it grows?

Hi Grant
The building will be removable. I'm going to trim back the hedge slightly behind it and then keep trimming it each time I cut the hedge. The stem immediately behind it is yew which is relatvely slow growing. I've left a bit of growth space so hopefully it will see me out until I reach the age when I can no longer totter out into the garden.

Rik, my wife was looking sideways at my laptop as I was looking at your mock-up pictures, and asked what it was. I told her you were building a brewery and she said, "What on earth from?! That doesn't look up to his usual standard"!

I find that very encouraging - she could at least spot the difference. I'd have been upset if she'd said, "Very nice, dear." Mind you, it would save a fair bit of work....

I am sure the engine drivers on your line will be making frequent stops at the new brewery soon

Perhaps I ought to replace the cafe at Beeston Market with a pub.....tom_tom_go wrote: ↑Mon Dec 31, 2018 5:59 pm I am sure the engine drivers on your line will be making frequent stops at the new brewery soon

Every village should have a pub...... it's the law!

Just catching up with this thread - that's going to look marvellous! I love the size of it, can see why you had to order some more board! Guess it'll be mostly vans heading in and out of there - plus the odd consignment of coal?
Looking forward to further developments...
All the best,
Andrew.

Yes, quite a building, even though I've scaled it back to fit the site. Decided to keep it simple and go for stretcher bond, but with stone quoins and cills. Heck of a lot of bricks to scribe! All good fun!

Re: A brewery for Beeston Castle
A couple of weeks since I posted on progress. The walls are now more or less finished and now assembled. Still need to do a bit of filling and scribing on the corners but will soon be ready for painting.
The components for the canopy and the two lucams are cut out and ready for fitting together and I'm presently slating the main roofs while I wait for the weather to improve so I can get the painting done.
Lost count of how many bricks I've scribed but I think it's 2-3000. Thank goodness I won't need to do those on the back of the building!!

Just wonderful Rik, such detailed work getting all of the brickwork to look correctly aligned but well worth all the time spent. Making me wish I had room for more myself, but enough is enough!
