I've told you, I don't want a car.

I want either a Lawley or a Lady Ann.

I think Cecil is on the right tracks with the car idea.

You can't drive a Lawley to work.

Which is a shame, 'cos I'd much much rather have one than a car, it's lovely!

Great photo of it too.

You never know. I thought the same way for a long time (so sorry if this post contradicts any I've already made!), but now many of my friends are driving I've discovered that it's actually really annoying to be dependent on lifts or at the mercy of the bus times when they're not. I do prefer public transport in principle, but sadly there are times when it just doesn't work out...

Time to resurect this thread and de-bunglify it!

As you may have noticed, i've changed the title to "Modifying Cumberland".

As I make alterations to the wee Beastie i'll post em up here!

A quick run down of what i've done so far...

She is fitted with Spec glasses, all of which are a nice snug fit. No need for superglue here!

The Pressure gauge has been turned around so as to point towards the side of the cab so I can see it through there, rather than looking through the forward facing spec glass.

Lubricator painted red!

Wooden cab floor added.

The ugly plastic standard Accucraft Gas knob has been replaced with a nice shiny brass one!

The screw down filler cap has been replaced with one that will allow me to use a pumpy bottle.

The regulator has been quite drastically altered. As she has a quite enclosed cab it was extremely difficult to control without constantly lifting the roof (more tea vicar?!) so an extension bar was produced and the regulator is now on the back of the cab in the bunker. This has made her soooooooooooooo much better to run!

Prior to PTLRfest she was also fitted with Nameplates which look rather good IMHO!

This week i've had a chuff pipe made but have yet to fit it! Gonna try and fit it, and take her for a test run with it on the Fairfield Railway on Thursday.

I have some plans for other work, but time and money will be the depending factors on future developments.

If you want any pics of the mods i have done then i'll try and get some to post on Thursday!

As promised, some piccies.

Image

Cumberland as she looks right now including her nameplates!

Image

Took her for a run at the Fairfield Railway, and before lighting her up I swapped in the new chuff pipe! Sounds very nice, and doesnt throw Oily Gunge out of the Chimney when clearing the cylinders! A win-win situation!

Image

This is a view of the new regulator arm. As you can see a hole was drilled through the cab back sheet (she has been running with this hole for a couple of months!) and an extension bar fitted on the regulator, with a nice handle which is easy to get at located just above the bunker!

Image

Her shiny new gas regulator handle!

Image

And finally, an overall view of the footplate, with all of the above visible, plus a better view of the extension bar for the regulator, the water filler valve, moved pressure gauge, spec glasses, red lubricator and wooden cab floor (OK, you cant see it as it is too dark, but its there!)

Will keep you updated with further developments!

The extended regulator handle is a great solution.

Tonight I have started to do some more work on Cumberland. The roof has now been sprayed matt black on both sides. I really didnt like the underside in green!

I've also done this...

Image

It took a while to get the smoke box door off, but eventually, I was left with these major components...

Image

The plan is to paint the smoke box matt black, and this is obviously the reason for the strip down. Now I have tried cleaning all parts with white spirit (as I have been advised) but this still seems to leave a visible residue on the surface. Anyone got any suggestions for further grease removal?

Also on removing the smoke box I found this...

Image

NO! Not the chuff pipe! The paint inside the smoke box has heavily blistered! Is this normal? My only guess is that at some point the burner has been roaring quite hard and this is the result!

Before submitting this post, I clicked 'review'! Noticed in the last pic how filthy the front of Cumberlands tanks look, especially on the footsteps! The scary thing is, that to the naked eye they look clean!

Very nice. Accucraft engines always have big modification potentials. The blistering will probably be the result of the burner up high. The mesh as you asked on my Edrig topic, should sort this out if you decide to have the gas up high.

looking forward to see how this ends up. I will just say that the mesh didnt work in my burner and made it ALOT louder

Yes I tried the mesh in the burner of my Edrig "Lady Adele" whilst it was marginally quieter I found that the run time was reduced by 2-4 minutes so I have now gone back to plain burner.

I have also tried an SM32 burner which I found offered no improvement to run time over the standard burner and whilst again quieter was also more prone to going out !
Ho hum, my quest for an improved burner continues lol

The only thing I can suggest to try cleaning the smokebox further is using degreaser (I tend to keep my engines very clean, so when the need bits painted I don't have to degrease them). I would of thought PTLRsam would have some? If not then look in a Halfords or somewhere like for engine degreaser
As for the burning paint, then the fire has probably been flaring or burning in the smokebox at some point, flaring happens if the gas is too high. Having said that, the oil burning in the smokebox that you get with accy engines would probably cause that as well
Look forward to seeing it when you've finished

Well all the bits of the smokebox have been painted today and are currently drying. Not as Matt as i'd hoped, but nowhere near as shiny as it was. The footplate roof also got a rub down and a couple more coats today! Will get some piccies when its all dry!
