My latest Scratchbuilding project

Post by laalratty » Sat Nov 22, 2008 10:13 pm

As you can see, i'm diversifying into waggon construction, my latest project being a permanant way van, based on the ex yellow van, which was the main permanant way vehical on the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway from the early 1980's untill 2006 when it was withdrawn due to its terrible condition.
My version only has a tool store at one end, rather than both ends but the internal layout is probebly going to be the same as the original (if I can remember what it was like, very few photos were taken of the van and none of the inside have appeared in print as far as I know). My version will still be yellow though!
The model uses 2 ends and a internal partition cut for another coach over 2 and a half years ago, and lain unused untill now.
Image
This shows progress at the moment, the sides are 4mm ply, it was surisingly easy to cut the windows out, the doors were not fully cut through, rather like the door markings on the laser cut IP engineering stock
The van is already starting to take shape, I have spent 2 or 3 days on it so far, preparing the ends and partition took a long time-the reason they were not used originally was that they were cut rather badly and needed lots of sanding to get square!
Finally, this van is to no scale really, it is just sized up for the ends that I had and then the length is supposed to be a best guess at getting the proportions right

I heared that they go well with toast...
cecil, its not in the wrong section cos its a Permanant way van, which by my reconing makes it a wagon!!! Anyway, i've been working on the window framing recently (using techniques learned from the IMP coach, which BTW got a coat of paint today), I also made up the first aid box for the van today.

Well that is what the original Ravenglass and Eskdale permanant way van looked like- a carriage with no windows. The interior layout was even based on Sir Arther Heywoods sleeping car. Anyway, can't see it being finished soon, there are no bogies or couplings for it yet.

Isn't that the definition of a van?

As I seem to be having a update on projects evening, here are a couple of pics of the tool/mess van, which had its first coat of primer today
Image
Image
The interior, which is virtually finished and just needs a couple of seats glueing in. The inside may also get painted, although work has only suddenly happened on this van because the freezing weather has meant that I can't do anything outside (I have also been building an IP goods van, this is at the painting stage as well)
Still no idea when I will finish the mess van though

The opposite of the way it happens on my railway, when it's freezing I go outside and do work on the railway, when it's ok I stay inside and build the models!

Despite the prostestations from the PTLR member that more windows are required, what I have actually given this Permanant Way VAN is a fetching coat of bright yellow paint
Image
And with the addition of some Woodland Scenics rub on transfers...
Image
The VAN looks rather complete, although i don't have bogies or couplings for this still, and im rather lacking in funds to purchase these at the moment, so it is likely that this will go on the back burner whilst I plan my next scratch built CARRIAGE project. As for what it will be, you will have to wait and see... :P  :D

Well the Ravenglass and Eskdale van it was based on was painted yellow, so why not? Having said that you should see the little flat/van composite wagon that i have built to go with it (that is grey and yellow!, and i've realised that I havn't posted any pics of it  )

Today i finished the "banana van" (as SLRmidge has dubbed it), with a coat of grey paint on the roof
Image
Here it is, and rather fetching I think it looks as well. I had drilled holes for vacuum pipes, although the set I brought for this van are being fitted to the FfR Ip kit. After all, it has at least got a handbrake (the handbrake handle that I removed from my Baguley is in the mess compartment)
Image
And here it is matched with the little tool/flat multi purpose vehical (hmmmm posh name for something that I dreamed up when I was bored a couple of years ago!). They are both fitted with IP multi height couplings, so should be fine coupled to binnie skips or the bolster set.

Nice, that yellow is very bright. Reminds me of that engine I can't remember the name of on the Ratty   (clever me, lol).

Edit: PERKINS! lol
