Forgive my ignorance but why Barn? Was that the maker, do they look like barns, or was one used as a barn??

It isn't clear why they were called barn. There are two popular theories:
1) They're huge compared to the pre-preservation carriages.
2) They were based on the loading gauge of the ex L&B carriage they acquired (carriage 14), so it's one of the FR's many bad nicknames (Lynton & BARNstable).
I think the second is the most likely story.

Also called centenary coaches six were built to celebrate the aniversary in 1965 of running passenger stock on the FR. Nicknamed barn as the coaches were built on the profile of the Lynton and Barnstaple coach 15 which became coach 14 of the FR when it was purchased from them in 1962. Their numbering commenced from 100.
