Penrhyn Quarry Workers Coach

Here's some more rolling stock that I built last week after being invited to an open day .

I decided that my Penrhyn train was too short and needed a couple more of the workers
coaches to go along with the saloon coach and the brake van that I'd already made.

Made from 3mm laser cut ply with 3D printed detail and using Busted Bricks
bearings with Binnie wheels and axles.

Thanks folks, as requested, sorry about the full size R/C transmitter in the background.

Mine are the 2 in the middle sandwiched between 4 IP ones.

Love the Brakevan, wish it was modelled more mate :D

Also is that RC transmitter in the background to scale ;)

No it's 12" to the foot scale :D Blame the Bloke behind the camera :x, Me.

Thanks, I'm thinking of producing it as a kit, the problem is it's very
fiddly to make, bending plastic angle etc. I don't want to make it simpler
as then it wouldn't be Sanford.

I thought the weight was a riveter water tanks but on your model it looks like a large wooden structure, modellers licence or am I just incorrect

When you shipping these kits out.

There was 3 versions, 2 with the water tank and the third with a low steel box filled with scrap iron
and concrete, this is the version that I modeled here, also the wheel base was extended on this version
to make it more stable, the same reason that the water ballast tank was taken off.

I may yet do a model of one of the previous versions.

Sorry no idea as yet as it will be very difficult to produce and work out a cost for them.

BTW apart from the obvious bits like wheels, axles, bearings and the deck. its made from plastikard.

Could it not be produced in ply. I need a lesson in 3D cad now Ive got a programme

If it were just an ordinary piece of rolling stock then yes, but the prototype is based on a locomotive so using 3mm ply
it would look to chunky and thinner ply just wouldn't be rigid enough. The plastic worked very well,
I used 2mm for the chassis, 1.5mm for the body and 1mm for the roof, I even managed to mill the
hockey stick detail around the door from 1mm, very fiddly to do, maybe more of a commision piece than a kit.

I'm no expert on these matters but I think you have captured the look of these vehicles better than I have seen before.
Well done you!

Is that oak stain making it look so good? Did you have some technique on the staining or just luck?

It's Radcliffs light oak scumble mixed with white spirit and linseed oil
then applied directly to the wood. Finished off with a coat of varnish.

Yes I have my own laser cutter, the CAD program I use for it is vcarve pro from Vectric, although not specifically designed for doing this type of job it performs better and is easier to use than a lot of the more expensive cad programs, also being one of the official beta testers for it I am very experienced in using it.

I'm really surprised that someone doesn't know how to stain wood and there is a special technique ...follow the grain

................. and use a soft rag, rather than a brush.
