The Commotion Railway - a balcony and picnic railway

Post by rebelego » Sun Sep 15, 2013 9:48 am

Welcome to The Commotion Railway (Norwegian: Rystelsesbanen).
To make a long story short... This summer I have been bit by the live steam garden railway bug. Problem is... I don't have a garden.
Instead I am lucky to have a long and narrow balcony, thus in June it started like this:

In July I got a Roundhouse Charles engine. The wider Billy and Lady Ann engines would scratch the walls.
Here is a photo taken from the control tower:

An upgrade to the track plan came in August:

Edit: Resolved photos.

Big trains in small space. Great.
And no problem at all with the grass...

That's a "garden" railway I like, no trees that stand in the way and no annoying plants and weeds that grow where they aren't supposed to grow!  ;)

Very jealous.

You can play trains and cook at the same time!

Have you thought about going into training!

You could be a balcony coach!

Thanks everybody!

The track is LGB and the radius at each end is R1, ie 60 cm.
It is actually squeezed a little bit in.
The other curves and the points are R5.

As the railway is based on loose track, I now and then take the track
with me and just lay it out on the ground:

Yes, it is LEGO. I can even boast that the wagons are scratch built. :D

It would be interesting to see a video of it running on the balcony...

The only video I have from the balcony is this:

A contraption made from an old Mamod SE.2a steam engine and some LEGO bricks.

The balcony railway is currently removed. It got a bit cold out there, and I'm going to change the windows, so the balcony has to be cleared anyway.

Edit: Resolved video.

Moves like an arthritic Ruston!

Traffic Pattern? What pattern? Spuds out; grain in, but cattle, sheep and passengers are a lot less predictable.

But this thread wasn't dead.
I have just forgot to post, so first some winter steam with the track just placed out on the snow:

More recently the track has been out on the grass again:

I will return to the main line at the balcony soon... :)

You should think of entering the lower photo in the Summer Photo competition.

Done. Thanks for reminding me. Though, maybe I get disqualified for double posting and/or prepublishing.

Not by any rule that I know of. That is some setting for a Garden Rail photo!
"What the hell is that?"
"It's a model icebreaker sir."
"It's a bit big isn't it?"
"It's a full scale model sir....."
