But are these people looking at it from the right angle, an angle which when you look through it you see poor locomotive rusting away in yards, is that preservation when we waste money building somthing new? Engines which worked all their life hard to give us what we have today (Global Cooling), disgarded for somthing newer? How will you feel when you get old and people don't want to know you, want to talk to somone new, even though you have the same potential, because that's what it's like. Another example is the SKLR where's the £3m being chucked at that? £5,000 is good but what about the other £2,950,000?
Your about the only person anywhere that things it was a waste of money, laods of people put time and money into it
Not really, whenever I've spoken to people who volunteer at the FfR about it they've agreed.
why did you build a new coach,  you probably could have bought an old coach and re painted it etc
Please point me in the direction of a FfR 102 that exsists let alone being for sale or costing less than £30.
some railways cant justifie spending tons of money on an engine that has loads of classmates already in running condition that is badly deteriorated.

it makes sense to spend that money on recreating lost classes, this will just make the steam movement stronger. :D

Ahh, she's nice- bord na mona? Looks a bit like Shane, and LTC Rolt pre- rebuild.

Anyway, nope, the 'leccy Caley is coming out soon, and the electric IoM Peacocks have been out for a while of course... they are bringing Caley and Mannin out in live steam too :notworthy:

:sign5:  this is the first topic on here I have ever seen that has started off topic (A1 steam loco, not garden railway) and has then gone on topic (Accucraft live steam Caledonia and Mannin, very much on topic!)
"What the hell is that?"
"It's a model icebreaker sir."
"It's a bit big isn't it?"
"It's a full scale model sir....."

 Sorry, I'm new here...

... I'll go disrupt an on topic discussion to restore the equilibrium :P

Number...

But that main fact is, that tornado is the only A1 in the world, there is a similar one, but not an a1.

Since you seem to be descending into petty bickering, can I offer some constructive thought on 60163?

I'll take your lack of response as a yes. :P

I must admit, I used to feel the same way as William about new builds. But seeing Flying Scotsman overhauled so many times that almost no original components remain has made me realise that to keep old engines running forever is not preservation, because ultimately you end up destroying all the historic material. So I think there will come a time when many of the engines we enjoy today should be withdrawn, and whilst there are of course a fair few Barry wrecks still to be restored many are still rusting in the open, and the longer they rust the more costly it will be to restore them. And, like or not, enthusiasts will always be more reluctant to donate towards types they can already see running.
So, to preserve the experience of working steam - because yes, that is an important part of preservation too - Tornado and others will have a big role to play.

And, whilst the thought has occured to me too that we already have a Peppercorn pacific preserved, the A1s are probably the most modern British express steam type not already represented, so from that point of view it does make sense. I'm not so sure about the Clan or the Patriot though, methinks they might be a little small for future main line operations...

yeah, it's begining to sound like the USA and Russia during the cold war.

Russia: We've got more nukes.
USA: Our's travel further, and do more damage.
