The worst accident that has happened to me, was when I was building my first garden railway at my old house. I had built a new section of track, the last yard of track was approx 1 foot off the ground supported on a couple of posts. I decided that I would try my modified Mamod on the new section, obviously stopping well before the last yard. Well the R/C fitted was 27Mhz and around me, 5 neighbours had walkie talkies set up, and unfotunately in DK the walkie talkie frequency is very close to the 27 R/C frequency. Well the loco set off, at nice steady pace up oneside of the garden, at this point, I guess some neighbour decided to say "hi" to a friend, because suddenly without any input from me, the regulator opened full and the loco hurtled around a bend and down the newly laid straight track. I never managed to catch up with it, and was shocked to see it launch itself off the end of the track, fly through the air and then plunge downwards and proceed to bury itself in the earth !

Luckily it landed in earth and it just got extremely dirty. I quickly managed to stop the wheels from churning around in the sandy soil and when cool, stripped it down and washed off all the earth paying particular attention to the bearings and moving parts. I was extremely lucky that no particles of sand had damaged the "o" ring on the piston rod gland.
That happened once to my other Mamod, after it had started to rain. I got the loco into shelter as fast as I could The loco had been standing on a siding where the ballast was mostly sand. The raindrops must have splashed sand onto the piston rod. I failed to think of, or, notice this, so when the shower stopped, I steamed up the loco, after a couple of turns of the wheels, steam poured out of the backends of both cylinders, and the loco could no longer move itself, which was very inconvenient as a local TV station was filming my friends railway and my loco was the next due to be filmed Both "o" rings were ruined and had to be replaced !

My accidents.
Hi. Since I only own Mamods and a Jane, and my line uses sharp mamod track, derailments are common on my line. One of the most serious crashes involving one of my engines happened on a line in Carlisle, when one of my mamods ran full speed into the frount of a stationary Mamod. Mine survived without damage, but the other loco rolled over and lost its funnel and chuff pipe! Sorry to who owned that Mamod.
