track screws

Post by Si » Fri Jan 04, 2013 3:45 pm

just wondering what we think is the best size of screw for fixing down Peco O gauge track? It will be sat on roofing felt which will be on top of decking boards.
Looked in the DIY shop and the smallest they had were 4g x 20mm which are probably OK length-wise but I wonder if they are a little too thick?
And of course, the most important question - where can I get the recommended screws on the cheap? ;)
thanks

Unless you use solid brass screws (not plated) I would not bother with screws at all. Steel screws will rust very quickly and become impossible to remove, so you might just as well use pins.
As for cost....there is no such thing as cheap brass anything.

I used to use 1" No 6 round headed brass screws - available from Screwfix AND there's a good bit of "meat" on the head for when you want to get 'em out again!

track fixing

Another alternative is screwfix stainless steel security fixings. Brass screws maybe dear but brass track even more so, not sure it would stop a determined thief but certainly stop a passing chancer
