A very popular starting point for Live Steam. With their low cost comes a number of problems which can be discussed here

Interesting to see your boiler does not have a 2nd insert, yet Lloyd's (steamie1) Mark II does.

The ends of the metal will be bent and sandwiched between the buffer beam as that is also the fixed mounting point. the best bit is that as it is removable theres no problem with warrenty.

Very nice - quick question, where did you get the "Beware Of Trains" signs you've used on the tunnel?

RWM Wheels On Mk2 Mamod

Post by steamie1 » Sun Dec 16, 2012 11:39 pm

It was not an easy fix but do-able! I made a semi circle cradle of brass sheet to make up the size
https://picasaweb.google.com/1041731771 ... mber201202#

The RWM wheels are too small on axle bearing see. But we overcome and adapt..

On oil I've tried the lot. Mamod suppplied seems best.

So does this mean that SL-style loco wheels [Jane, Janet, DS/RWM steelers] can fit on New Mamod locos - and New Mamod wheels fit onto SL-style locos? :D

That's interesting Lloyd as it was you that asked me on the YouTube Mark II loco video if IP Jane wheels would fit and I said I did not think so. I still stick by that statement.

So it looks like Roy Wood has gone back to plain brass bearings on those spoked wheels to press fit into the chassis holes. This is not the same method as the IP Eng (holed disk & plain steel), Dream Steam & PPS plain steel wheels which all use bearings which fit into those chassis holes and are held in place by large nuts. So these could not use your brass cradle as those nuts would get in the way. Also I think you would need to de-rivet one of the Mark II chassis frames in order to get those bearings and nuts tightened up, unless you have a very thin spanner for the bearing.

So would the SL & MSS standard wheels fit the Mark II - only if you use a brass cradle as above.

Will the Mark II wheels fit an SL or MSS loco - only if you drill out larger chassis frame holes for the larger bearings used.

Will IP Eng/PPS/Dream Steam steel wheels fit the Mark II - unlikely unless you can somehow reduce the size of the holes in the chassis frames but still allow the bearings to be screwed up with the nuts.

Chris Cairns.

sorry to break in  but here are the works photos.
I had to make a longer plate to get the front curves under the buffers. it is painted matt black but was still wet when the photos were taken.

That does look better than the strange cut-outs that Mamod have made.

Just needs a tool box, or some jacks & tools to fill up that blank space now.

By the way you can clean up the machining left on the buffers by using some fine wet and dry sandpaper with Brasso then lots of polishing.
