Visiting meths-fired tram

Post by hussra » Wed Nov 28, 2012 4:09 pm

We have this interesting-looking tram visiting just now.

Image

After a jolly good clean yesterday (had been collecting dust for about 10 years - having been left rather oily) I had a play with it this morning. Took a while to suss out all the controls! Here it is in a state of undress:

Image

The works plate says "Built 1992 [I think - might be 1982 but I think 1992 is correct] W. H. Andrews, Seaton Ross".

Single (huge) oscillating cylinder, geared about 2:1; displacement lubricator with oil feed regulator; exhaust diverter (funnel or downwards). Five-tube meths burner with chicken feed; boiler has 16 fire tubes (yikes) and steams nicely. On-board water tank with hand and axle pumps. Quality engineering.

And here's the video...

On a fine summers day the noise it makes would be great to listen to in the background as it steams around the garden - great loco :)

It's interesting to note that it self-starts, even though it's a single cylinder oscillator.

Sometimes! Was lucky that time.

Indeed - not sure if I can hang on to it quite long enough to make it to summer, never mind achieve a complete circuit. (There again, the owners don't have a 32mm line.)

A very nice looking Tram, with some interesting engineering.

Hopefully you will get plenty of time to enjoy running it.

Chris Cairns.

I'm amazed an axle pump doesn't stall it. Fantastic looking thing.

Indeed. The cylinder is a huge great thing, mind you. This ain't your typical oscillator technology!

I have an oscillator with an axle pump and that's got Mamod cylinders.
