Track laying - how to resources

I'm sure that this is something asked all of the time by newbies to garden railways and that you are fed up of answering it - "what's the best way to built a base for my track?".

So I'll ask a slightly different question....are there any resources on line that look at a number of the more popular alternative options and lets the reader assess which would be best for them?

Obviously I've done searches and found a whole host of different methods - you name it and some one will swear by it...but would be nice to read a site that did comparisons.
